Mars II Problems Help!!

Got a version 5 ps2 and a mars II problem is that while it will read boot backups it will not read them. And in the rare case that it does load them it plays them choppy. I've noticed that the spining orbs menu(ps2 start up) that they are also jumping around and freezing. I know that this must be due to the chip install. My friend had one installed and his orbs froze but he took it back to the guy and he fixed it. So anyone know how to fix my problem?
