I have a new compaq dv6110 laptop with this burner in it. everytime I try to burn an audio cd it gets almost finished and the says it cannot write the files to cd. in windows media it tells me to clean the discs. I check before inserting to make sure they are clean of dust & fingerprints of course they are. When I use the Sonic software that came installed on the comp the advanced reason says Sense:03ASC:10,ASCQ:00(Command2A)Px.dll:2.7.27.500,pxdrv.dll:1.1.670,PxMas.dll:2.7.27.500,PxSFS.DLL:2.7.27.500,PxWave.dll:2.7.27.500,pxwma.dll:1.0.0.3 If anyone understands this please respond. I have tried HP Lightscribe cds,Maxell cds, TDK cds. It will write the files on Memorex cdrws.I haven't tried writing any dual layer dvds yet but I have made the recovery disc for the comp using Verbatim Video Guard dvds.So it seems to only have a problem writng audio cds. I have searched for firmware updates there are none .Thanks for any help.
i tried burning a mp3 disc on a maxell cd it too failed when i explore the disc i see the files but windows media player doesn't. I burned it using the sonic software. i must go to work now but will try other discs later gonna buy some different brands to see if i get same results.

I just bought an HP Pavilion dv6119us with the same drive and I am having the same problem (I also cannot burn DVDs). After getting jacked around by Sonic for several hours, I have literally spent the past 36 hours on the phone with HP Tech Support getting the total runaround attempting B.S. fixes (including a full system restore - what a pain!). 37 wasted disks later, HP has finally confirmed that there is indeed a problem - at which point, they promptly booted me to their Hardware support division. I am waiting for a call back. If they ever figure out how to fix it, I will post the results here, although I'm not sure it will translate to your Compaq.

1/12/07 Update: HP now claims that because the drive will burn a data CD from Windows Explorer, and because the Lightscribe feature works, there is no hardware problem that is covered by the manufacturer's warranty. They make no guarantees, but if I buy the extended technical support plan, they "may" be able to make it work.

In the meantime, I have tried burning CDs and DVDs with Windows Media Player, Winamp, Ashampoo, and Nero - all return hardware sense error codes.

I don't know what else to do and I'm so pissed, I'm ready to throw the machine out a window. These things have been selling like hotcakes - how is it possible that we are the only two who seem to have this problem?????

OK, this is going to sound ridiculous, but it solved my problem. Hat tip to the kid at Circuit City who sold me the laptop.

Change your write speed setting in Windows from "fastest" to "8X." The setting is in the properties for your DVD drive - click on My Computer, right click on your CD Drive and go to "Properties", select the "Recording" Tab and change the writing speed to 8X. Problem solved - at least for me. :)

DO NOT EVER CONTACT HP TECHNICAL SUPPORT. THEY ARE RUDE, COMPLETELY USELESS, AND A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME !!!!!!!

Glad you found a solution for this vexing problem. I will tell you this that burner does not like cheap media.Fuji cds Made In Japan will work. The archival quality and the maxell pro cds.

I just got an HP DV6125SE Media Center laptop for this past x-mas
So it is still new with a warranty and I use the term warranty loosly
and it has the Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-851S DVD-RW-DL Lite Scribe and I use HP Lite Scribe dvdr's and cdr's and HP cdr's.
It worked great from day 1 till the other day I wanted to copy a photo
disc and it kept saying my photo cd was blank after I had just made a copy of that same disc and then Sonic wouldnt even detect my drive.
So I called HP Tech support (if you want to call it that) and they
said that they think it is a bad drive. Now he said they would send me a new drive after I pay for it of course and they said I have to install it my self. and that they would refund my money for the drive when they got the old one back. I even have the conversation transcripted for proof. Well I decided to take it back to Best Buy where I purchsed it with receipt in hand. Geek Squad said they couldnt take it back becouse it was over 30 days old GRRRRRRR imagine my agravation now. Anyway they did take a look at it backed up the hard drive and restored it for me. Now I can read any and all cd's and dvd's :) yay right? Wrong now I cannot burn cd's ;( I can burn
dvd's and Lite Scribe labels but no cd's and I have tried resetting my burn speed, nothing, I have even tried different mfgrs of disc's, nothing, and I still cannot get anywhere with HP. So now I'm stuck with a thousand dollar peice of garbage!!!!!! My Aunt is a very well respected attorney here in Florida, I say we unite and bring a class action law suit against HP. Also here is a number for AMERICAN SPEAKING HP 1-800-756-0608 press option 7 and it is an escalation line meaning the last line of deffense after you cannot get anywhere with the indians at HP Tech Support.

I have the exact same HP with the exact same problem. It probably burned about 15-20 DVDs and CD's before it took a dive. Now it won't write to any media using any program. Mine is just over 30 days old, so I'm SOL. I'll bet anything that at least 50% of these crappy drives fail just after 30 days. Ridiculous, useless, piece of crap.

I finally found an HP authorized repair shop that was able to try and help but they had to send it back for repair, they said I would have it back in about 8 days. I also talked to my Aunt about what was going on and she said that if these HP products are failing under warranty and the mfgr (HP in this case) will not help, You can indeed bring a class action law suit against said company. but you need to have at least 500 or more patitioned signatures or something like that but she also said it could also take up to a year or more to get things moving. :( Anyway I will post back when I get my laptop back and let you guys know how it is working.

I've found with mine that if you load up NERO to burn a CD, it usually fails right away, but then if you try again with the same CD right away, it has about a 70% chance of burning properly. Damn, I never should have gotten rid of my Sony External writer!

Ok I found out some other useful info. I did some research and found out that the Matshita drives are made by Panasonic. It took some doing but I found a contact phone number 1-866-462-5138 If your having problems with the Matshita optical drives call that number and bug the proverbial he!! out of them to get your answers. We as consumers have rights and we need to practice them.

check nero forum and look for the one titled WANT TO INSTALL NERO ON NEW LAPTOP. That's how I solved my problems with my drive. The drive only likes high quality cds.Maxell Pro cds,Maxell cd MIJ. Very picky drive.Helps if you have more than 512mb ram installed too. It should not be so complicated to use as intended but that's what I had to do to get it to work. AGGRAVATING AS HELL!

    Coachop,
Sounds like you got lucky. You say that you have to use Nero and certain cd media, But my drive was working great burning HP brand cd media just fine for the first few weeks. And I have 2gigs of ram on my laptop by the way. So using Nero and using certain cd media is not the true fix, I would be willing to bet the farm, you'll have more problems later on. The fact of the matter is this particular drive is JUNK!

I don't disagree with you. I can now use all my burning programs. I can truly say my main problem had to do with media and ram as I have not any more problems but as we know that is subject to change . I will say I did go to Sonic/Roxio's site and I was not the only one with that particular error message. I have not removed the software as it's what came with the laptop since it's a Media Center OS and not causing conflicts with others for now. So for now it ain't broke so I won't fix it until the need arises. If they offer me a drive like say an LG DL MULTI with Lightscribe I'll take that. I have an external one on my desktop and it's been a great drive as has the internal one I had in my desktop. The only reason the internal was remove was my daughter called the warranty people when she couldn't open the drive and they just replaced it. when all she neede to do was tilt the tower.(a gravity issue). I'd join a class action suit since we paid for a product that didn't work as it would be expected.

I was watching the SuperBowl Sunday night and they had a few HP commercials on and they had a new slogan, HP The computer is personal again. I think a more appropriate slogan should be... HP The computer is broken again.

I have the same drive, same problems. Just purchased the Compaq V6110US about 2 weeks ago. Love it, except for the cd/dvd drive. I use Nero and get a hardware error most the time I try to burn cd's or dvd's now. I was able to burn the System Recovery DVD's but nothing since. I've also had the "Blank Disc" problem on discs I know contain data, work fine in other drives, and even work in THIS drive later on (reboot, cool off, whatever it is, sometimes discs work, sometimes they don't). Anyone starting a suit, sign me up. I'm going to contact their support just to say I went through the process...

I have an update on my situation with the drive. I got a call from Best Buy saying my laptop would take a month or so to be fixed becouse the drive was on major backorder and that they would give me full refund of non-sale price back to put towards a new laptop, OK,
They never asked for the reciept either. Now the lap was only $649.99
and Those idiots at best buy gave me back 1100.00 dollars. anyway I went ahaead and upgraded to the dv9000 series with the 17" wxga screen for a hundred dollars more. well about 2 days later I got a package from Fed Ex and sure enough it was my old laptop unfixed of course so I got ahold of a case mgr at HP and they sent me a new dvd drive with the same specs but different brand. I installed it and it fixed it so now I have 2 new under warranty laptops for $100.00

Good for you! Now, can you tell me the make/model of the replacement drive - I need to get one that works and I can't get any help from either HP or Circuit City.
