Hi any one got any ideal how you format a Maxtor 250 gig sata 2 hardrive in windows? It shows up in device manager and disk management but not in explore and my computer never had so much trouble in all the years I’ve had a computer and made up computers just to do a simple task as format a disk.
I’m running windows xp pro sp2 on a Asus K8NE-Deluxe motherboard which is NVIDIA 3 chipset I’ve seen numerous reports on the internet about problems with this disk and motherboard but yet to find an answer I’ve got the jumper on the back of the disk set limit 150g since this board doesn’t support sata 2 but when I try to format it either in disk management which by the way puts 100% load on the cpu or partition magic or any other disk partition it either does nothing or partition magic gives error couldn’t format mbr its also given other errors some numbers which I can forward if need be I’ve uninstalled the NVIDIA chipset drivers and just used the windows drivers still the same im going to try it in my son’s pc see if it will work on his motherboard but would like to get it to work on mine, before I forget yes I have tried Maxtor blast 4 what ever its called first time I tried it it said format complete but it still wasn’t in my computer etc doesn’t even see it now when I run Maxtor 4 pain in the Arse its still under warranty but if I don’t get it working might chuck it in the bin and never buy a Maxtor again cheers

I don't believe there's anything wrong with the drive...and if you plan on tossing it in the trash, I'll give you an addy you can send it to! :)

The problem may lie in the motherboard's lack of support. You did mention that it doesn't support SATA 2 specs.

I'm sure you've updated the board with the latest BIOS revision?

I thought sata 2 was backwards compatible with sata 1 it says it is? Like you said looks like the motherboard is the route of the problem yes I’ve updated the bios etc ran out of ideas now, going try it in my sons at the weekend if it works in his looks like ill have to give it him which I’m sure he wont mind only problem is his board is an Asus with the nivida 2 chipset might run into the same problem ‘o’ the joys of computers looking on the internet only the Maxtor hardrive has this problem with my motherboard whish I had brought a Samsung now next time ill goggle it before I buy they say you learn the hard way.

Actually...if memory serves, it was the NForce2 chipset that had the issue with the SATA2 specs. The support wasn't there. There were problems rising up everywhere about the chipset issues when these drives were starting to hit the scene.

Some board manufacturer's not only have the BIOS updates, but they may also have newer chipset drivers to help with the issue. But like we agreed here, the board and the drive have to talk in order for it to work....so yeah, don't ditch the drive or think it's Maxtor. They make some of the best drives out there.

We all have our stories!! I've used Maxtor since the 20GB was the largest drive...and had no issues with them since. Bought me a WD1200 (Western Digital) when it was crowned the performance king, and it shuts off whenever it feels like it!

The problem lies with your mobo, not the drive.
The drive might be backwards compatible, but your mobo doesn't support the drivers you'd need for it to work.
There was, however, a recent chipset driver update that solves this problem in some cases, so i'd suggest you try to get the latest update and see if it works.
If not, return the drive and trade it in for a Ata or Sata 1 drive.
    Or sell it on Ebay.
