I recently purchased an OptoRite DD-0203 DVD-R/-RW, DVD+R/+RW burner. I am using DVD Shrink 2.3, and have used Verbatim 1x and Universal 1x Media with no problems whatsoever, but I am now about out of 1x media, and want to move up to 4x media.
Has anybody used 4x media with this drive, and if so, which has the highest success rate? I am more interested in -R media, as -R is the most compatable in my standalones. Sorry Benjimen, but +R isn't always better.

I am purchasing a LG GMA-4020B in the next week (good price @ BestBuy) and I was wondering if anybody has this drive and which media works best for them. I live in Canada so a link to the best/cheapest media would be great, thanks!

1-your DVD burner make, model, AND firmware.
    Sony DRU-500A 20.0f
2-DVD media you use, + or -, R or RW, including brand and speed rating.
Bigpockets 49p DVD+R 4x 50% less success rate at 2.3 speed. Avoid like the plague.
Datawrite Reds 23 out of 25 worked. 1 of those failures due to boyfriend's fingerprint.
Intenso DVD-R a couple of failures. STill reccommended.

3-Your burning objective(s) (copy DVD or PS2, author a DVD, etc. etc.)
    Authoring DVDs and backups.
4-What you are playing/testing the burned disk on.
    Toshiba DVD
5-Where you are (CA, USA, UK, etc.)

    1. Pioneer 105
    2. Bigpockets 59 p x2 speed ones (SOLD OUT in a wk) "dont know wtf they are and dvdinfo bombs out" - only 2 coasters due to labelling. 30/30 otherwise. Common <1 delays or blips between chapters though but mainly due to hardware as play fine on pc..
    3. Backing up dvds
    4.Samsung DVD-S224
    5.UK
6.DVD Shrink + Nero latest version.

Dont think this media is too bad, looking into new standalone that plays dvd-r's full of mp3s also. And plays fine with no dual layer transition delay (god i hate that) Any ideas?

I had recently upgraded to the Toshiba SD-R5112 Drive, and it has the capability to burn at 4X. I had previously purchased the 1X Princo media from this seller and for the most part they were OK (one batch I ordered had MANY bad discs, close to 25% now give read errors). But these Blank DVD-R's were supposed to be 4X. The software I used can burn at 4X (Latest version of Stomp RecordNowMax), I tried at least 5-6 of these 100 that I had ordered, and all of them only burn at 1X, Not even 2X. So needless to say I was fairly upset. I decided to contact them and right off the bat they automatically started putting the blame on the software, my drive, or the capabilities of my computer system, which is all complete BS. Because I had purchased several different brands of 4X DVD-R media from different places locally and they all burned at 4X fine. So the solution they said was for me to pay out of MY OWN pocket to ship this media back to them so that they could "test" it out. I refused because why should I pay for something that is being falsely advertised, the two options that I thought were more than fair was for them to pay for shipping of this media back. Or to simply give me $20 store credit to a future order since this media only works at 1X (1X media was about $20 less for a pack of 100). They refused.

So basically I'm here to say, STAY AWAY from AllMediaOutlet.com a perfect example of why the place with the best price doesn't always equal the best deal, it's better to pay a bit more and go somewhere that actually has some type of customer service.

    Fujifilm 4.7GB DVD-R

These are really good. I've been using Fujifilm ever since I started backing things up with 700MB CD-R's

Magnetic: Good choice of burner and software. I have had total success with just shrink and instant copy, really that is all you need, I think you are going through a few unnecessary steps, but hey, it works for you. I have found that Verbatim and Imation DVD-R works very well, was a +R person until I found out that -R is the industry standard for movies and I found the play in every stand alone and computer - bar none! Even my DVD player in my car! I just go the new Sony DRU 530A but didn't have as much luck with it in the computer I am running it in. Probably just a low memory problem, I have 256 DDR and really need at least 512, I can use Instant Copy 8.0's on the fly mode like I can on my other computer with 512 mb in it, I have to rip to hard drive first and that takes so long, I can burn on the other one about 2 to 1 ratio. If you have any input on the problem, please respond. Thanks

All right Benjimen! You seem to have added some flexibility to your portfolio.
Lately I have been exclusively using Ritek GO4 (i.e. 4x)disks. Since you can get them in the U.S. on-line for about $.89 each in quantity 100. I have burned over 250 and believe it or not only one defective disk. I will be picking up a Pioneer Ao7 drive very soon and will update you with 8X DVD-R media info when available.
I can't believe this thread is still alive.

So what do you think about one machine burning on the fly and burning 100% success and the other has to burn to the hard drive first, do you think it is a memory problem? I am very curious because I am thinking about ugrading from 256 to 512 if that is problem, I mean it should do what my other machine does and more, it is a 1.8 ghz AMD Athelon and my other machine with 512 in it is a 1.47 Ghz AMD Athelon, plenty of hard drive space on both. Any input would be great.
    Thanks again,
    Benji

I am not too sure how Instant Copy works, but some programs do cache into the memory or virtual memory given to windows. So it might just be your memory difference. Are they both on the same Operatoring System? As that will also change things, and if the new one has junk going on in the background. When one of my friends bought a new computer, the default seting was to perform, Virus scan, Disk scan and Defragmentation every hour. That was crazy, and really killed the speed as it would prep 15min before hand doing I don't what. Check to make sure no useless junk is running in the background of your new machine. You never know what silly thing may be set on as default.

Both machines are running XP Pro with all the updates. Both machines I reformatted myself so no silly junk is going on in the background (I hate that too by the way! LOL) However I am doing some experimenting this evening with TAO (Track at Once) and DAO (Disc at Once). I have set it to DAO and burn on the fly with no image to the hard drive first, it seems to be working great, like my 100% successful machine, so I think it just might have been one setting, but we will see if it closes the disc correctly.
Thanks for the advice, any advice is good if you use it.
    Ben
