Ok, so we all know how much we love to help people out around here. Maybe some of you guys help answer questions all the time and you feel that you don't get enough love?

Well, I say we implement Rep Points. If you feel that a user has helped you, well then you would click a link in that area of the thread, like say on the users name that helped you and rep points would be added to that user. The person that received the help could leave a message for that user thanking them or just whatever they felt like saying.

I know I would feel so special if I had someone giving me points, wouldn't you?

    **update**

Also, those points that have been given to you, will show up under your name.

This system has been discussed as well...

Truth is it would be abused in much the same way the auto-promote system is now. You have cliques and they all vote for each other to achieve higher rep/karma. There really is no good system to show appreciation to those who really help.

There have been a couple of threads on this, but they've been a few years ago and I can't track them down.

EDIT: Here is the original thread where it looked promising ~ http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/230239

    ...and another ~ http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/305094
    ...and another ~ http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/278560

I think there was even another one somewhere too....

Glad I looked as I ran into one of my old buddies, dg089. :p

wouldnt this work if you tracked who gave who points?

You could set a number within a certain period like 2 per person a month. As in you can only give the same person a total of two per month.

Also, if the same users give themselves rep points within a certain time period maybe that could put a block on their "point giving" capabilities.

I don't like the idea of positive rep points, but I do love the idea of negative ones that are employed on car forums I belong to. It works like this:

Member violates the rules, other members give a negative rep point. Mod/admin checks this, and then the point is assigned. If the point is undeserved, the giver of the point receives a negative rep point. For every year you go without getting points, one is removed from your record. Accumulate 3 points or more, and you're instantly banned.

I love how it really cleans up other forums. :)

No, I don't think so, because if the point is undeserved, it goes back to the person who tried to give it. People would quickly shape up and obey the standards or they would be banned....perfect, to me.

That does sound like a good idea Aus....could be a pain tracking down alot of points though, especially with a site this size.

I'm all for it if it can be done in a managable way....anywho, I'm not the one who needs convincing. That will be left for admin to decide.

hehehehe.. looks like a test for those 108 active accounts that are kicking about ;)

It sounds good in theory, but these kinds of things only work on sites with a few hundred members. Then there are people who might often make very useful posts full of information but by the nature of what they post and where it never comes to the wider notice because it is specialist stuff.
Also don't forget the "devils advocate" members. The people who search for clarification, or point out the pointless duplicate guides and impossible to do things that just seem to be looking for repeat posts.

I still think the best method is the "thanks" type arrangement which then goes back to useful posts. No way to really abuse that as it's only positive feedback.

anyway..........yahoo answers rating system has completely failed...its just the first person to comment gets the star lol.... the person who sees it (opened the thread) thinks its the answers.... hits the solved button and leaves!
