I have a memorex dvd/rw and I use clone and anydvd. I can back up dvds using Philips DVD-Rs (DM4S8B25F17) PHL DM4S8B25F17 1-8x. This is the only dvd-r that doesn't turn to coasters for me. They have now change to 16x with a new version. My burner now spits them out and calls them bad media. I've tried Sony, Vertabram, Fuji, Memorex, and a few other DVD-R's and they all won't work. My questions are the following: Do I need a new burner and if I do, can i buy it from best buy or circuit city? Does anyone know of any good dvd-r media I can buy from best buy or circuit city that does work with my Memorex burner? Thank you in advace, J
You didn't say what burner you have but you could try a firmware update. Hopefully that'll allow you to use Made-in-Japan or Verbatim media. Philips apparently uses some MIJ and MCC (Verbatim) stuff, but it's a crap shoot as to what you get because they also use some lesser kinds lime CMC. If the firmware update doesn't fix things, or it doesn't fix things to where you can use decent media, then buy a new drive. Pioneer 111 and NEC 3550as are in the low $30 range may save you money over being tied to a particular brand anyway.
Hello, My burner is a memorex rw 16x (3202 3286). Can you please tell me where I can find this firm ware? Thanks again, J
Thanks for all your help. I tried the firmware and I don't think it worked. My burner still tells me that the disk i'm using is bad media. The old Phillips dvd-r 8x were made in china and I think that's why they work. Does this mean I should give my 2004 Memorex burner a proper burial? thanks, J
Right now philips 16x. It's a new version of Philips. The old 8x were made in China, these are made in tawain. I've tried sony, memorex, tdk, vertabram, fuji and countless others. i'm starting to think it's my burner. My burner will spit them out and call them bad media. Thanks again for your time.
Well if you've tried Verbs and Sony (the best types of media) then it looks like it's your drive mate.
Agreed. Even if it isn't, cheap media can be costly later on. Your Memorex might still be useful as a reader-only drive though, if that's worth anything.
Ah yes - as long as it isn't the laser in the drive that has gone. Possibly could be that cheap media has ruined your dvd laser (there are two laser in combi drives - one for Cd and one for DVD) Just a point.
