First off I'm getting a NEC IDE DVD Burner Model ND-3540A. It seems to burn everything I need and is a great price. $39.99 :)

Anyways I saw on this forum that people don't like Memorex blank dvd-r+r media to burn to? I was going to buy some since best buy is having a %30 off sale and I could get 50 disc for $20.89. Whats wrong with Memorex? What should I be buying if I want to backup DVD Movie's I have?

Which software is the best to burn DVD's with also? Do I have to rip DVD's to burn them or can I make exact copies?

Thanks in advanced to anyone who can answer my questions.

Steer clear of memorex media, it is far too unreliable. Buy RW media firstly, this will ensure that you get no coasters (dead burns).
People here like to use Verbatim, taiyo yuden, Ritek. Along with dvd shrink to compress, dvd decryptor or nero to burn with. AnyDvd by slysoft is a good app as it removes encryption, macrovision, region coding etc.
Shrink & decryptor are available for free, just look in our software section. AnyDvd & nero need to be bought. There are not many movies that you cannot burn with that combination of software.
There are loads of guides how to use all of this to great effect, look at the top of the page.
Nothing is guaranteed when burning, you just have to experiment. Just don't multi-task whilst burning & turn off your anti-virus.

Best Buy usually has sales on Fuji media. Look at the Fuji wrapper for 'Made in Japan', which should be Taiyo Yudens, the high-quality manufacturer. I think they're on sale this week. Verbatims are excellent, and TDK, Maxell, Sony are also good.

I also have had Bad Luck with Both Memorex and Maxell Media but have had Fairly good results useing Sony OEM Silver Top Disks which are Dirt Cheap if you Look on E-Bay...
You can get about 200 4X Disks for about $35-$50...When Burning Data on them I burn them at 4X but when I want a Reliable Burn for Video DVD"s I burn them at 2.4x which greatly lessens the chance of any Burn errors....

    Cheers

If your player plays both formats it won't matter to you which you burn. However if you let friends or relatives borrow any it might be better to burn -R blanks. They seem to be more compatible with a larger number of players.

scdark, Best Buy has the Fuji DVDRs on sale this week for $20/50-pack. Remember to look on the wrapper for 'Made in Japan' (=Taiyo Yuden). Otherwise, they may be Prodisc (yuck). Circuit City also has TDK 25-packs for $8. Don't know the MID but it could be TDK, CMC, or Ritek.

    - unfortunately DVD burning is just not the same as CD burning. and as to CD burn speeds i've never gone above 24x, i usually stick to 16x. DVD speeds most people recommend 4x.

..Memorex/CMC - don't let them near your Burner...... I wholeheartedly recommend Verbatim [bold]datalifeplus[/bold] after something like 1500 of them..

Way too much for crappy media.I've gotten fuji ty's for as little as 33 cents a piece.40 cents is my max price, with the exception of full hub printables. Just look for made in japan like the rest of the members posted. It works on sony/fuji/tdk/and maxell.

Like Jerry746 posted, it usually comes down to what those stand alone players that you use them in prefer.

Try a small batch of maxells.1 pack of each format.Look for the 3 or 5 packs that were made in Japan.Cmags are reported on some of the small packs and they will state made in taiwan.

Burn those maxells and play them in the those players that will be used to view them. They will give a no disc inserted type of error if they don't like one of those formats. Then you can stick to the format that performs the best, from that nec 3540.

E-Bay is Fine as Long as you Only Buy from Reputible Sellers which means from poeple with at least 98% Perfect feedback and poeple who have sold many thousands of Items on e-Bay and also read the Feedback Comments before Bidding as if that Person as Sold Bad DVD"s too other Buyers they will say that in there Feedback comments.....

You can also ask the Seller if his DVD"s are Made in Japan or not...

Thanks for the help so far everyone but I got another question. I see best buy trying to sell 50 packs of fuji that say write x1 and I look on ebay see the same 50pack for the same price but say write x8. I know this is the speed but does it really matter that the disc say x1...?

Does it force the burner to only do x1? I don't want to wait all day for a burn... I think I saw someone else say for good burns they should be done at x4 how long does that take on the average movie DVD?

The RATED SPEED is usually the max speed it will burn at. Thus 1x blanks if true 1x will take a long time to burn. One thing to keep in mind is to buy the best blank media possible. It doesn't pay to purchase cheap blanks and then get half of them as coasters. What did you save if that happens. Once you find blanks that work well in most of your players and burn well stick with them. Don't switch just because you see something on sale. I buy only Ritek media and some TY's if the price is right. Ritek makes Ridata and Arita blanks priced somewhat cheaper. I won't even use those unless I can't find the Ritek version. All are good but I want true Ritek grade A media. If they sell the Ridata cheaper there must be some reason for it in my opinion. Don't short change your media.

Yes thats a good point. It seems like best buy is trying to unload a lot of poor quality blanks. Who wants to sit around and burn 4.7gigs at 1x and then find out it didn't burn correctly I know I don't.

Where do you buy your Ritek media DVD -r? I was thinking I was going to goto best buy tomorrow and buy some fuji's made in japan if they had them (Fuji 25-Pack 8x Printable DVD-R Disc Spindle $29.99) Price seems alittle high.

Is there away to setup a poll on these forums so I can see what everyone thinks is the best media?

Thanks you guys rock helping out noobs saving me some cash and coasters.

Just check out the first couple pages of afterdawn's dvd media forum, you'll get a good idea of good (and bad) media that way. Its a good start anyway..

As I just wrote on another thread we have a site in the uk who sell genuine ty media and are very reasonable with prices for other discs. Gonna buy 300 8x +r verbatims in tubs of 10 for £2.49 each. Ebay is excellent for lots of things but I wouldn't risk ebay for media as you can't trust feedback for dodgy media sales (take silvertek for example- selling fake ty discs- huge positive feedback. Yet that seller is even advertising the hub codes of those discs even though that proves they're fake!). The mind boggles quite frankly..
