LOL! You got me ScubaBud...but I know there is a program here on aD that can tell. If you know the program I can find out. Funny about that though...I used to only buy them at Staples, till they JUMPED in price, now I get the at Circuit City. Other than that, I can't find much of a difference.
You can get that mfg code here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_identifier.cfm http://www.dvdinfopro.com Nero: Extras/test drive/extra/disc info tab Dvd decrypter
No problem, nero and dvdinfopro have scan disc tests on them so you can check those backups for errors.
Those are the ones to be cautious of. I have burned a few teons with that code, but I keep my speed at 2.4x. That's the only media I tried, and had a couple of spots of pixellation on my very reliable sony stand alone player.
Those are the ones some some people have trouble with. That's usually the first thing to change if you run into problems down the road. There is still a lot more media out there that is even worse.
Yeah...thinking about changing and trying something different, but alittle apprehenive about the whole thing. Don't want to waste any money with it. But can I ask why there are so many issues with it? Like in some threads I have posted in, I have never had an issue, this including, it has worked on every dvd player that I have played it on. And I keep seeing that nobody really likes them except for a few of us.
the only thing they (memorex) were any good for was cassettes. i myself had atrocious problems with quality of various flavours of memorex CDs, and since i started the DVD burning lark have never been and won't go near their DVDs. Too many ppl post about their quality, especially CMC mfg codes. At the end of the day there's so little cost difference it's (for me) been worth listening to the folks on various forums, here and elsewhere about media quality. i Started out dvd burning with bulkpag with were tyg02 code, then i started having skipping problems/reading that they were fakes. Switched to Verbatim datalifeplus (slightly more expensive, but vastly cheaper online than high street shops) and no more probs. Last night i ran a few Nero 'dvdspeed' tests on some bulkpawq & other makes that i have, and guess what , the error peaks were massive on the bulkpaq's, even on discs i had watched without incident. edit - i forgot to mention that i've used 25packs of Verbs from singapore, taiwan and india, all code out to 'MCC 02RG20'. these are 8x discs burnt at 4x, (with a target limit in Shrink of 4300mb - just out of of paranoia!) Each to their own, but i'm staying with Verb's unless 1 single disc skips, then i'll go for TY i guess, though i keep seeing more and more posts about them being faked
CMC media = bad. thats the ones i have had problems with lately. not sure what i had at first, but the CMC are the new ones for me. when i first started buying memorex, they had no writing in the core of the disc. now they say "memorex, is it live or is it memorex." not sure if they started writing that when cmc picked em up but i have no problems with the blank core media. btw, if you liked the one that staples carries, why not have them price match??
Lucky for me, a good portion of the memorex I hastily bought were Ritek R03. Just to give you an Idea of what DVDinfo Pro says. Memorex CMC MAG E01 (uncopyable after 3 months) -- PI peak-416 Avg-68, PIF peak-416 Avg-13 -- PI Total - 374,166, PIF Total-26,527 Memorex Ritek R03 (still works great after 3 months) -- PI Peak-416 Avg-55, PIF peak-9 Avg-0 -- PI Total- 703,721, PIF Total - 161 the Ritek R03 is a vastly superior burn. However it is still no where near the quality of reputable media. Dynex Ritek R03 (2 months old) -- PI Peak-128 Avg-73, PIF peak-1 Avg-0 -- PI Total - 921,954, PIF Total - 73 TDK Ricohjpn R01 (2 months old) -- PI Peak-6 Avg-2, PIF Peak-1, Avg-0 -- PI Total - 15,985, PIF Total - 13 Note all of these were burned at 4x with a lite-on SOHW 1633s burner with latest firmware. This is not the greatest quality burner to begin with. It is blaringly obvious that memorex media does not hold up. the amount of PIF errors CMC has is astounding. Granted I do want to buy some new memorex and do testing every week to see how fast they degrade. Of what I've tested so far TDK and Maxell have the least PI/PIF errors. (TY doesn't have the greatest compatability with my burner). Another interesting factoid is that the Staples brand CMC MAG E01 did very well on PI/PIF error tests. However these are only about 1 month old and may degrade fast. If you base your assessment of quality on the total number of PIF Errors on a disc, then definitely stay away from memorex.
Damn...I guess I am the lone supporter in CMC! Everyone here has REALLY valid points. It is just weird how everyone rips on Memorex, but I guess if you have had bad experiences with em, why keep using them? Thankfully *knock on wood* I have never had a bad experience, but it is good to see that there are better alternatives in the way of media. So for now, I am going to take my Memorex's and go sit in the corner...LOL!
Personally..... I think its all the dvd player you have. I haved burned memorex...the cmx..the ritek...rioch...ty's...aml/compusa...they all work for me and they all last a long time. I have had some bad disks. But I have a good Philips DVP 642 player that is made to play most things that are out there. If you invest in a good player, that usually does the trick. I had an old Cyberhome 300 and it played nothing. I was blaiming the media. As soon as i switched dvd players, bam.. played everything. No pixeling, tiling all good. I do burn my disks slower then what they are rated and no more then 4x. I also thing if you have a quality burner like a lite on it makes a difference. In the end I follow this formula.. good dvd player rated to play backups(dvd-r, dvd+r) + a good slow burn 4x max+ a good burner (not no name)= a good playing back up
From what I've gathered ever DVD player has a "limit" so to say as to what it can accept for errors on a disk. I have several discs that have PIF errors spiking into the 80-100 range that play fine on my JVC player. However, When I take these discs to someone elses house and try to play I get problems in the effected areas. I've determined based on some bad burns I've had that my threshold for PIF errors is around 130 on my JVC. Yet I've seen some DVD players that crap out in the 30-50 limit. Now that I know this info I always try to keep my burns so that PIF errors never peak above 30. And to do this I can not use memorex. Ideally I like to keep them under 5. I guess the moral of the story is, just because you can't see the problem doesn't mean it isn't there. Now that I've used DVDinfo pro and looked at all those Memorex burns, it has me concerned for the longevity of those burns. But hey, thats why I back up my collection in the first place.
LOL! My DVD Player better be good. This is what I got: Panasonic 1000W 5.1-Ch. Home Theater System with Progressive-Scan DVD/CD/MP3 Player
now i have to jump in here and defend my 2 cyberhome ch-400's. (theyre like gold dust in the uk now, used to sell them at whsmiths); they play everything, even most of my crappy bulkpaq's. better than playing discs than my ps2 (but then thats not saying much!)
