hi eveyone i have a dell dimension 4550 pc . One day i took comp. 4 a ride to a different house.it was in the back of my van lying down flat. it nevr tipped . when i got back 2 my house and turned it on it displayed on the moniter call dell customer support-previous attempts to boot have failed. So i opened up my comp. and noticed that the heat sink on the pentium 4 had fallen off. i was like ok and put it back on. When i turned the green heatsink cooler switch to lock it in place it broke.{Cheap A@@ Peace of S@$^}I pushed th coller down harder 2 make sure it was on all the way despite broken switch.I closed the lid, plugged everything back in and i got no signal on the moniter. i checked the graphic card and it was good. So i tried a different moniter. Nothing.I called customer support at dell and they said get a new heat sink . i said will this fix the problem and the idiots said hopefully.Wow thats the best customer support ever .Can Someone plezzzz help? Plez.?

You may have cracked the motherboard.

Did the CPU come loose from the socket?

Did you clean the thermal paste off and apply new paste?

How did you check it? On another computer?

I understand the vaguness of the reply, there are to many other things that could have happened. It is even possible that you could have "blown" the CPU starting it up without new paste and properly seated heat sink.

If it was a minor crack, you wouldn't be able to see it.

You can get thermal paste just about anywhere. CompUSA, BestBuy, Radio Shack, just to name a few.

Clean off the old paste with rubbing Alcohol. Apply new paste sparingly.

At this point it becomes difficult (if not impossible) to troubleshoot over a forum like this. I recommend you take it to some computer shop that you trust.

it might be your cpu cause if teh heatsink fell off while it was running and it ran for 15 min without it it could of burnt the cpu out but i recommend you taking it to a pro just like dolphin 2 said

I would get a new comp. There's no telling what could have got shorted out if the heatsink was down on the mb. Might cost more to fix than a new one. Bad luck Dude -sorry
