messenger

    can anyone tell me how to disable messenger so it dosent start running as soon as i go online.

    Dont have it on my machine, but from memory its something like tools>>preferences>>>start with windows, remove tick and allow to run in background, remove tick.

    try that

    Hi, sorry was trying to work from memory...shouldve known better :-/

    Just checked on my 2nd machine, its tools>>options>>preferences and take the ticks out of the top 2.

    ps It is MSN messenger you mean isnt it and not the messenger service :)

    when you say tools do you mean admin tools?

    Yeah sorry, ive not been very clear on tonights postings.

    Load messenger as normal.
    Click on the tools menu at the top.
    Click the bottom selection (options).
    At the top of the new window you should have 6 selections.
    Click the 3rd one from the left (preferences).
    In the first section (general), untick, if they have ticks in, the first 2 options, which are -

    run this program when windows starts
    allow this program to run in the background

    Click ok and reboot, it should be gone.

    Hope it works this time

    EDIT : just to confuse matters...you dont HAVE to untick the running in background one. This just makes sure it closes when you hit the X and not just minimizes.

    When I first started using windows XP I tried everything to stop Windows Messenger starting up but to no avail.
    Now I use a tiny program called 'Safe XP' which allows me to disable it completely.

    If I want to use it I just untick the disable feature.

    agent-k it is actualy windows messenger and not MSN messenger, but ive downloaded the program and using it anyway, looks pretty good, thanks.

    done that DMW soon as i started to do it i rememberd ive done it before but totaly forgot about it, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
