Mfgr cannot figure this out either.

    I installed an external HD two months ago. It worked find until a few days ago. Now XP cannot find it, Restarting does not help. Acomdata (the mfgr. does not know why...either.) Other forums have no suggestions. HD works on the laptop, but not the desktop.

    Any suggestions?

    tried another usb port ?
    checked to see if usb port is working with another device ?
    checked device manager for unknown devices or errors ?
    Tried system restore ?

    In addition to what "philraz" suggested, is the USB port on on-motherboard one or a PCI one. Also, USB ports can be fragile. I've got one that is unusable because a piece is broken and it won't make proper conact. Also have had issues with a PCI USB port card suddenly stop working. Changed PCI slots & it came back online.
