Hi, ive been using mirc for a coule of years then took a long break, now when i connect it says:

    -AfterNET- Network Announcements
    -
    -AfterNET- ---------------------------------------
    -
-AfterNET- Notice to [users] from Rubin, posted 09:36 AM, 10/12/2005:
    -
-AfterNET- If you haven't already, please register an account with our AuthServ account bot; type '/msg authserv help register'. Our Channel Service bot is X3, type '/msg X3 help' to learn more
    -

Im having problems registering this comes up:
Account <***> not registered because it is in use by a network service, is too long, or contains invalid characters.
    -AfterNET- --------------- Thank You--------------

Then either the name is already taken, or has, like it says, invalid characters.

Then maybe there's a bug in the system, have some of the server techie's have a look at your problem, maybe it's software related...

Not really, there are java applets that are designed to let you chat on a set channel, but nothing that allows you to freely choose servers and channels, to my best knowledge.
Have you tried reinstalling mIRC? or switching to Chatzilla (taking that you are using firefox of course)?
