    Hi,
I`ve had some interesting experiences recently with some avi files, and depending upon which programmes I ran them through: "Avifixed" / "DivFix" / "DivFix++" /"Digital Video Repair" or "AfreeCodecVT" (all downloaded from this site incidently)
gave me answers ranging from "ok" or "seems to be ok" to missing codecs.
I thought I`d got lucky when I stumbled upon "AfreeCodecVT" but I soon got lost trying my best to get to know what the hell a codec is and failing to find the obvious "Fix file ?"..much like a lot of poeple I imagine.
I gave up in the end and my avi file still isn`t "fixed"

Codecs are used in the creation of video files.
The same codec has to be on the PC to play the file.
Some codecs are installed on the PC system wide, available for all to use.
Some codecs are self contained within applications (VLC media player uses its own codecs) and are not available to the system.

To view the codec required by the file (video and audio) and to see if the codec is available on the PC, use 'GSpot'.
Drag the file on to the Gspot window.

    http://www.headbands.com/gspot/v26x/GSpot270a.zip
This example shows the video codec is 'XviD' and the audio codec is 'AC3'
    Both are installed.
The video should therefor be playable using buttons 1 then 2.

Codecs can be downloaded individually as required or in packages.
