Can someone help me please? I have been playing .mkv files for a couple of years now with no problems. Until the last few months that is. I can play smaller .mkv files no problem at all. It is when I go to play larger files that I have the problems. The smaller files are between 500Mb and 1.1Gig (TV programs) When I play the larger 4Gig to 11 Gig movie file I have my problems. I have always used the VLC player but have used The KM Player, WMP & Div-x, all with different outcomes. The Media Player won't even play them. Div-x freezes without playing. The KM Player gets out of sync - badly, and the VLC player pixel-ates and freezes.

I originally ran my machine with Vista and now run Windows 7. I have a Dell XPS running an Intel Core Duo T7700 with 4Gig RAM and a GeForce 8600m GT 256Mb graphics card. I watch them on my LCD TV via an HDMI port and cable.

I also ran the Windows 7 evaluation OS copy, if someone knows that this could be the problem, before getting the official version.

It is becoming quite frustrating as I play these files on a desktop with lesser specs with no problems what-so-ever.

I hope someone can help me. Thanks.

I had the exact same problem. I am just posting this because after an in depth Google search("VLC .MKV Lag" you can find it easily, I just have to go to work) I found a way to toggle with VLC settings but still there was lag playing 1080p files(the Big Lewbowski to be exact.) I have an ATI HD card, HDMI out to my TV, dual core with 6gb RAM, and that didn't do the job. Instead of all the hassle, I went out on a limb and bought the Western Digital HD media player. I've posted this in a couple of different threads, but let me tell you it was well worth it! There is absolutely no lag whatsoever, and it plays the files flawlessly! The picture is great, and the best investment I've made so far, It's about $100 after taxes but it was well worth it, I suggest you do the same!
