I was just wondering what is the easiest and fastest way to play mkv content on the xbox? Anyway to stream it without losing picture quality. Not worried too much about whether the audio is stereo or not.

You can't. 360 only support WMV. So any program will have to convert the mkv on the fly to WMV. Which is pointless for quality since that's the purpose of getting an mkv to begin with. Get the WD Media player, streams everything.

I use MKV2VOB. i found it when looking to stream MKVs to the PS3 and found the Xbox will stream it too just fine.

it still converts it to a WMV, not true quality.

no it doesn't. spits out a mpg thats only a little bit smaller then the OG file. if qualty drops any its not noticeable at all. and your wrong about Xbox only doing WMV only.

    Heres some more info:

sorry I meant the media center alone only support WMV. I'm actually testing this. Good post.

I play these files with Media Center with the Xbox connected as a extender. Since it outputs .mpg it playes fine. since there a large file it does buffer a little more. the PS3 does handle it better (Use Media Player for PS3 streaming.) Im sure there is a qualty loss of some kind but it has to be mininal and looks great.

I checked out Wabashmans link and that seems like it would be much easier than converting the file. I plan on doing that on my desktop and see how good it works.

    Thanks for the link Wabash!

welcome, and it works fine. stream with my laptop almost every day and only had a few problems. mainly it not wanting to buffer, so just start a different movie/show and exit back to the one you wanted to see and it works perfect then.

I used ps3 media server works with xbox 360 and that streams mkv's wasn't to hard to figure out. Only issue was that it uses the cpu's power and not the xbox's so you have to have a good PC in order to run 1080 and 720 rips otherwise they seem to come through in great quality.
