I need to convert a foreign HD movie (.mkv) with English subtitles (.ssa) to DVD. In my quest to do this I came across a program called AVI2DVD but unfortunately it will only accept .srt or .txt subtitles. The subs were extracted using mkvmerge GUI and were saved as .ssa and also .ass – after Subtitle Workshop rejected them as being bad or unsupported. My question is: “are there any programs that will convert .ssa to the .srt format -- besides the aforementioned program which didn’t work (for me)?”

That program didn't recognize the sub file either. I decided to give up trying to convert that particular movie and opted an English one instead. However, this time I've run into a different obstacle, being "DTS audio": AVI2DVD says its 6-channel WAV and reports an error.
