Had to chime in on this one WoW is not what I would consider a good MMO. Currently there are not any mmo's that I would consider good . Now, if you want to go by popularity I would say that WoW is at the top, but popularity does not make something good. I would say the closest thing to a good MMO that is out right now is Everquest 2, followed by World of Warcraft. Vanguard is dieing a slow horrible death, FFXI is ok if you can find a constant group, but good luck with that. Lord of the Rings is good if you are into lord of the Rings and like doing quests, and well Guild Wars is not an MMO (it is Diablo 2 style game where you can chat from your avatar). Though I must say, you got 1 thing right Warhammer Online is the game to wait for, it is awesome (have a friend in beta and have watched him play).
To be fair, back in June when I posted that Vanguard was pretty new and they had, I think, 150,000 people playing. Not many compared to other games but enough to keep it going, not sure what they have now. Even though there is a lot of people that play WoW because it is the "in" thing to do, it still keeps 9 million paying monthly, so there has to be something good about it. Yes, Guild Wars is like Diablo 2 because there isn't a persistent world to meet others in, it is still a MMO. Yes it is hard to find people in FFXI, most are in high end areas and I don't know much about Lord of the Rings, just know that it is supposed to be good.
didnt notice it was posted in june, my bad... Though Vanguard recently merged down to 4 servers, so they are just trying to stay alive at this point, heh. But anyways, by saying Guildwars is an MMO is like saying D2, Hell Gate London, and every other similar game is an MMO... Even when the game came out NCSoft never called it an MMO... They refered to it is a Cooperative online game, people just miss took it for an mmo.
Those games can be played offline. Guild Wars can only be played online, so that qualifies as the online part. They have sold over four million copies of the game, so that is the massive part, and you can play with up to 23 other people, so definitely multiplayer....
I could argue with you all day about Guild Wars NOT being an MMO, but why not go straight to the source? From the FAQ So, as they say, it has some similarities, but it is not an mmo...
So to you, calling a game an MMO covers a very narrow spectrum of gaming. Where you run around by yourself doing quests, have slow battles with one or two enemies at a time. To me, calling a game a MMO covers a broader spectrum, and in Guild Wars, there is fast combat, forcing you to group with others because you will be fighting against ~10 enemies at a time, and is based around PvP instead of a bunch of quests. That is why, I believe, they called it a Competitive Online RPG because it doesn't follow in the same line as the tradition MMO.
