I am making a monster of a computer for intense gaming, I am getting 8Gigs of RAM, dont tell me I dont need it, one day I will. I am getting 2 Geforce9600 in SLI x16 2.0 750W powersupply and a whole bunch of other stuff but I dont know what chip to get. I need an Intel chip, AMD sucks for gaming I wanted to know, should I get a Q6600 2.4Ghz Quad-core or Core 2 duo 3.0Ghz? Same price from where I am getting them, what do you think? I think I should get the quad core because you get more cores and more Cache.
    Thanks

Unless your are running XP 64 bit or Vista 64 bit, you have 5 GB too much memory, because the OS isn't going to recognize/use more than 3 GB.

I know, I'm going to get Vista Ultimate x64. But I want to know which chip I should get. Also, is the Nvidia 9600 the most recent Nvidia chip?

Do you actually have any idea how much RAM you will need for gaming?
Stick with 4GB, because you can't even use more than 3.5GB in a 32-bit OS. It's not that you won't use more than that, you can't use more than that. 64-bit OSes allow more than that much but you shouldn't be using 64-bit for gaming, it's not a good idea.
By the time you need 8GB of RAM, your two 9600GTs will look very, very pathetic. Trust me, you do not need 8GB.

As for the CPU, go with the Q6600.

The 9800GTX is the most recent nvidia graphics card, but the most powerful one by far is the 9800GX2, which you can also SLI, but for that I would recommend using an 800W Power supply, for example a Thermaltake Toughpower. Don't skimp on the PSU for an SLI system or you WILL regret it.

There are benefits to 8gb ram. My favorite is that you don't need a page file.

sam, could you elaborate on this: "you shouldn't be using 64-bit for gaming"? I haven't had any problems...yet.

There aren't any inherent problems with games on a 64-bit OS as such, but gamers tend to use various different peripherals with their PC, along with various different software applications, and a lot of these are a bit iffy under a 64-bit operating system. This situation is no doubt improving, but one of my friends still finds it very hard to get all his drivers for 64-bit.
As for having 8GB of RAM, you don't really need a page file with 4GB, because you always have at least a gig of RAM spare.
