I've reinstalled this thing four times now for "other" issues. Also, I have installed the latest patches. Now, after editing my movie, I attempt to render the project in DVD format and save it to my hard drive. Toward the end of the rendering process Studio 9 just quits and I get sent back to my desktop. Anyone else have this problem with this software.

First of all ....the Pinnacle customer support is a joke. I've tried to contact them three times and all I get is "canned" responses. I even sent them a copy of my computer specs. but never got any feed-back. I eventually worked through most of the issues on my own. The key item for me was the get Studio 9 on it's own hard-drive. That seemed to stop the "freezing" problems. It needs to be kept clean and defragged as much as possible. I still can't burn directly to disc for some reason. I have to save it as a project then open it with Nero to burn the DVD. This actually has been working out well. Still the fact remains that Pinnacle released a faulty product that doesn't work as advertised and I feel that we all should get some kind of compensation for all of our aggrevation. Even a free upgrade to Plus would be a good start. If I don't get satisfaction I'm switching to another product and everyone I know will be avoiding their junk.

Sadly Pinnacle Studio 9 does not seem to be unique in being unstable in this type of package. I have had problems with poor quality DVD videos produced using miniDV video captured, authored and burned using Nero Vision express 2. Trying to get round this problem I purchased Ulead DVD factory 3, only to find that while it could capture video, and you could add various effects etc, it freezes followed by a complete crash every time you tried to actualy render the material for burning (always at 8% progress)! To be honest I am considering going back to recording my home video on VHS!

Well, the only downside to that is VHS has a limited life-span due to the magnetic technology the tapes are based on. DVD are the way to go...... if we can ever get them to burn correctly. I've been having good luck with Nero so far. The problem has been Studio 9. I've also found out that all DVD players aren't created equal. I have an older RCA DVD player that only likes store-bought DVD's, as my homemade DVD's skip and freeze. Yet I play them on my in-laws' newer Sanyo player with perfect results. It's a matter of trial and error to see what works. You might want to slow down the write-speed to 2x or 4x to see if that works for your burner. Some players also require you to bookmark your projects in DVD-ROM format because that's what was available at the time. I'm going to upgrade to a newer DVD player in the near future so I can use DVD- & DVD+ formats.

My DVD player is new and supports DVD-R (and DVD+R) disks plus a range of other formats. I have narrowed the problem to using Nero Vision Express to capture the video. When I captured the Video with DVD factory and then imported to Nero Vision Express and burned the disk it plays perfectly! So I have one package that is crap for capturing the video, but can burn the disks, and another that can capture the video but can not burn the disks. Starngely I found another post about this problem with Nero, and that person found that copying the jerky Nero produced disk with DVDshrink then burning the copy with Nero produced perfect disks!

I originally had problems with Nero when I was burning to Memorex DVD-R's. That was my mistake. You need to buy discs that are manufactured in Japan or Singapore. Memorex contracts with a lot of Chinese companies and their quality sucks! I'm using Fuji now with great results. TY also makes a great disc. Bottom line is that disc quality before the burn is also very important.

[bold]Where do I start. Studio 9 is the single worst piece of software I have ever encountered.[/bold]
Why does studio 9 plus take days to install!!!!!!!! I had to spend hours and hours trying to install this complete rubbish software. ( I wish I hadn't persevered now ) It would never complete the installation. At 100% done it would just sit there for hours. After rebooting the machine it would be executable but doing anything made it crash. Then when I went to uninstall it to try again there was no listing in the XP add/remove progs for Studio 9!!!! So all I could do was a system restore and try again and again and agian. Eventually I got it to install by shutting down all the processes I could from task manager.
Then my virus killer (AVG Free 7 ) would not work. I tried reinstalling it but it would not even install with Studio 9 present on the PC. I've had to change to another virus killer as after a day's attempts and looking on the internet I cannot find a way to get AVG to work!!!!!!!!!
Does it work OK now????? Does it heck.
I tried the import DVD option. It crashes every time before even attempting to import any titles. These are not copy protected DVDs but ones of my own making using Nero and are correctly formatted DVD titles. Alo some recorded on my DVD recorder. And it doesn't just crash itself - it takes the whole of XP with it.
How can they release such a piece of bug ridden rubbish and ask people to pay for it????????? I have read several good revues of this software but obviously these reviews are done on clean test machines in non real world situations.

I really do not appreciate stock (auto generated probably) answers which have little or no relevence to the content of my question. That's what you get from Pinnacle. They can't be bothered actually trying to help.

I am a technical support engineer my self and do not appreciate such shabby treatment from a well established company.

Things have got even worse now.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have discovered that not only the virus scanner no longer works but also my Belkin 54g USB wireless network adapter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I decided to uninstall pinnacle sudio 9.

AFTER THE UNINSTALL WINDOWS NO LONGER SAW MY CD AND DVD WRITERS!!!
I TRIED UNINSTALLING AND REINSTALLING THESE BUT TO NO AVAIL.
THE ONLY WAY I COULD GET THEM BACK WAS BY DOING A SYSTEM RESTORE!!!!!!!!

THIS IS THE SINGLE MOST INCOMPETENT PIECE OF SOFTWARE I HAVE EVER HAD THE MISFORTUNE TO USE.

I still have not found a way of uninstalling this heap of crap without losing my DVD and CD drives and meantime I can't use my wireless network either.

I would appreciate it if someone could help with this!. I am running on windows XP Home with Service pack 2.

I don't see what the problem is with Studio 9. I started years ago with the old DC10 card and now have 9.3.4 (Plus) and it works fine. I do a lot of video editing with it from recording live theatre on my camera and producing the finished job on DVD and tape to recording old films from the tv and putting them on disc also. The SVCD option is also very good for short (20 minute) clips of interesting news items etc. I make fire education movies for the bush fire brigade of which I am a member from stuff I have filmed mixed with other clips from videos or DVD's. Again I have no problems. I am so busy with it now that I have 2 machines with breakout boxes and big hard drives in both to keep up with my work. They are sometimes working 24 hours a day on recording film and converting to DVD. It has become second nature to me and being a cabinet maker I have the computers in their seperate room in my workshop so I can leave them working and get on with some "real" work in my workshop, just checking them occasionaly to change discs and tapes etc.

John, it looks like you're the exception. I built a completely brand-new, high-end system with tons of RAM and two seperate 120G hard-drives, one specifically for Pinnacle. I've reinstalled this program three times, have all of my firmware & software updates current, but with NO effect. It appears that you got lucky, as in 80% of the people using this software have difficulty in even getting it to work. What the program is supposed to do is great, what it does for the majority us in real life is a joke. For the record, I am employed as a fire officer. I am also responsible for all of the training topics at my station as I am the training officer. I won't have time to use this Pinnacle software for anything involving the fire service because I don't have the time to waste constantly resetting the program!

I too am training officer, unpaid as ours is the volunteer bush fire dept. This Pinnacle problem, I assume you are in the US, I am in Australia and I have noticed that there are different versions in very similar boxes that perform a lot differently. I bought Studio 9 AV/DV Deluxe when it came out because I wanted the whole kit with a breakout box and capture card as I gave my version 8 complete to a friend. It had "Asia" stamped on the box. We have to accept that down here in Australia we are in the Asia region, I suppose that is why they call it Australasia! Anyway the thing was definately not "Plus" because it didn't have the Chroma Key and Picture in Picture which is what I bought it for. All of the Hollywood FX were locked as well. I was pretty annoyed. I ended up having to buy an "upgrade to Plus" for another $100 and then it all worked ok and it was version 9.3. Then recently I built another machine and needed another card and breakout box so bought the same again just to get the card and breakout box, I ignored the software because I allready had it with the first one. Then I had a computer crash with something unrelated to Studio and had to reload all the software and used the new discs, it loaded as "Plus" complete with everything and was version 9.4! I checked the box and it was the same except for one thing. It has "International Version" written on it. All of my stuff is also "Made In Germany". When doing dvd's I always slow them down to 4X as standard procedure. I do the same when copying discs in Nero as well. I find that if I use the fastest speed they tend to stop playing after a while in a dvd player.
    Hope all this helps.
    John.
