ok some one gave me a pc about a 99 model they say the motherboard is fried ???? how do i know this??? the fan fell off and the proccessor is all white i wonder if the proccessor is junk the mother looks good. i need a pc expert on this i wonder how much a motherboard will run me??????it has amd anthlon. i have no way of telling ghz or mhz there is numbers on it
the processor is white because it has heat-conductive grease on it to transfer heat from the processor to the fan. about testing the mobo, connect the fan back to the processor, and try turning it on first.
the problem is i cant hook up the fan on the cpu .on the side there is a plastic tab piece broken off. thats why the fan fell off . plus the fan wires are messed up . where the cpu is it holds in that white plastic piece that tab is broken off ?is there any other way to find out if the mother board is any good .if i do put new fan in and figure out a way to hold it in place.>and then plug in HOW WILL I TELL THE MOBO IS JUNK????????
Unless your motherboard has 4 holes at the corners of where the processor goes so you can use some kind of bolt-on heat sink, your mobo is f'd up. new Athlon (K7 type) motherboards can be had for $30-70. Whether the new board fits depends on whether the original case is a standard ATX or Micro ATX or if it is a proprietary design. What brand computer do you have? Is there a model number? If it's home built or built at a PC shop, you should be all set. If it's a Dell or something like that, you may have to get a replacement motherboard from the manufacturer.
Take some photos of the board, or list the boards ID numbers here. Usually they are found around the CPU, or near/between the PCI slots. As far as telling what AMD proc it is, there should be a black label on it...it will have a long string of numbers. You can check AMD's website on what to look for to identify it. Some of the older CPUs from AMD have the number stamped on the core's die, top right hand corner. Ex: my 1600/1700 are stamped on the die, my 1800s and 3000 are on a label.
OK the person who owned this (built pc) said the fan and the thing underneath fell off wich fried the motherboard .it was holded on each side of the cpu. the motherboard does have 4 holes around the cpu.but that aint the way it was holded on i look inside and see a gold thing and it says T-BIRD AMD K-7 .i have no idea who makes the case.she also said the power supply is no good she said it smokes i dont see anything burnt inside. i wonder what happened /? can i get a cheap mobo the same as this one
Ok, they built the PC themselves. So far, so good. That means no proprietary parts. Now it is most likely either ATX sized motherboard (has AGP slot and ~5 PCI card slots), or it is mini-ATX (Videocard slot and 3 PCI card slots). Go to newegg and check out Socket A motherboards http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ice=&MaxPrice=&SubCategory=22&Submit=Property you are going to need another processor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ce=&MaxPrice=&SubCategory=343&Submit=Property and a power supply. since you are going to need a new mobo and processor, you should probably upgrade to an AMD64. It will bolt right in, inplace of the existing motherboard and processor. will only cost you maybe $30 more, and will be much better.
here is the deal i want a motherboard that will hold 164 pin ram i think like the ones thatt are in there so i guess old mobo is junk????????????? where can i get a cheaper cpu i would mind say 1.0ghz this pc is going to be for the kids i want to do this as cheap as possible

1) The Pentium (and Celeron) use a different retention than the Athlon system you used to have, it's easier to install and less likely to break something. 2)Don't worry about who made the case. In the EXTREMELY unlikely event that it does not fit a mATX motherboard, you'd be better off getting a cheap case for ~$20 than trying to get some obsolete motherboard that would fit the case you have. 3) The buttons and speakers should plug in, but you'll have to look at the pinouts on the motherboard. 4)Yes.
thankx again for all your help. so yo say that the buttons and speaker wire should line up. i hope this mobo will fit this case.i do have 184 pin ram lying around from my pc.all i need is a fan. heres the big ? i am going to put in a maxtor 40 gb hard drive from my (compaq)i upgaded to 200gb.the lady took the hard drive out because of info on it. ok when i get this all together i would think i have to reformat?even tho the 40 has xp on it.how do i do this ?????????? merry christmas from ozzymary
You MIGHT not have to reformat it, but because all your hardware is different than the Compaq you took the drive from, at the very least you will probably repair the installation of XP. Put in your xp disc and it will show you an option for repair. However, you would be better off doing a fresh install.
