You gave no information that is helpful, without the make an model of your motherboard.

The best way to find out is from the manufacturer's website.

from the description I'm thinking you have an Athlon XP 1900+ at 1.5Ghz. That will be a socket A board - the bad news is that almost every socket A motherboard had a different maximum processor speed. If you're able to look inside the PC, the motherboard name should be printed on it.

Well spotted ddp, I looked up the model number he gave me and found nothing...

As you see from the table culpeck, you can put up to a 3200+ CPU in it, which is about equal to a 3.0-3.4Ghz P4.

Yes, for a start you can only replace it with an AGP card, and secondly to upgrade your graphics card you will probably need a new PSU as most graphics cards use more power than the 9600 nowadays.

If you're looking to play modern games, you really want a better CPU than the XP 3200+ and a better graphics card than AGP can provide. If you want to update your system, it's best off to start fresh really, only keeping the disk drives and peripherals.

Ideally a 45nm Quad core CPU, but they're not cheap.
