If this does not work one of the capacitors on the circuit board for the inner lcd has gone bad . replace the outer lcd assembly. You can buy one on ebay for less than 20 bucks Be very carful not to tear the ribbon . I have before

Thanks for all the advise guys.
Disconnecting & reconnecting the connector (several times) didn't help.
Will have to investigate the lcd PCB replacement or some other solution. I have also been told that this is a common fault or "feature" of this phone which can be corrected by flashing the system and installing new firmware. Sounds like "M" should be congratulated on their robust product design !

Yes - I stripped the whole thing down about a half dozen times and on reassembly made sure the connector was firmly pressed home. Each time I just got the same blank screen.
The phone does still ring when called - so it would appear to be something to do with the display but I don't know what more I can do ! I would also like to try and recover the numbers and pistures before it dies completely but can't access it via the USB port. Are there any suitable software / drivers available without greasing Motorola's palms with more hard earned cash ?
