    hey guys,

been lurking around here learning from other people's posts and trying to figure things out on my own. i've hit the brick wall on this one so i thought i'd finally post.

i'm using DVD-RB Pro 1.09 and doing movie only + english audio + english subtitles.

[bold]heres the problem:[/bold] some stand-alone dvd players will automatically play the subtitles, while others won't.

[bold]my question:[/bold] is there a way to make DVD-RB keep the DVD subtitle settings so it'll act just like the original DVD or a copied DVD w/ menus?

i've done some research and found that part of the problem has to do with the DVD players. people have suggested to try turning off subtitles by default. i've looked at some of the ones i have access to and they don't have that option present. i can only turn off the subtitles once i put the actual DVD in. while it may not seem like a lot of work, i just find it annoying having the subtitles automatically play and having to turn them off each time. the original DVDs and copied DVDs with menus do not have this problem. it only occurs when i do movie only + subtitles.

aside from which DVD player is used, the other reason i found was that the information controlling subtitles are contained somewhere within the menu files. since i'm not keeping the menu, the controls aren't kept. i haven't found a DVD-RB specific thread on this. it's mostly from other programs such as clonedvd2, but the common factor is that it's movie only + subtitles.

i've found one solution, but really hoping to avoid it. this is from the user 2COOL on doom9 ( http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45440 ). he suggests to:

    - use PgcEdit
    - add a new pre command
    - set the sub-picture value to "set to none"

after following these directions, the subtitles do exactly as expected. they do not play by default, but i can still turn them on/off when i want to. i'm trying to avoid this tedious extra step for several reasons. it adds unnecessary effort, i can't find a way to automate it, and i can't automatically create ISO files with DVD-RB. since i have to edit each DVD with PgcEdit, i do a file backup. i've read that ISO backups + burns are more ideal because of some spacing/size issues one gets from regular file burns. if this is my only option, so be it. but that brings me to one last thing.

[bold]last question:[/bold] is there a way to make proper ISO files from the DVD-RB file output? is there really a difference between burning an ISO and burning the files through nero? (okay, two questions...)

even if you can't really answer, thanks for reading that whole thing..

last ?('s) first, Imgtool classic is a very good iso creation/burn utility, Jdobbs had once included the feature to "create iso" into rebuilder but had removed it, I've tried to find sly way's to suggest reincorporating this feature and this is as good a reason as any!

imo, iso burning w/ dvdd or imgburn is far superior in stability.

I would like to know if the sub problem is w/ every encode you have done or just a few titles also is there a relevance between dvd players that have a default language setting and those that don't?

I know not really an answer but am interested in what exactly causes the sub selection.

possible suggestion: movie and menu only w/ menu encoding selected?

the sub problem is with every DVD i've encoded when playing on certain stand alone DVD players. these stand alone DVD players are the cheap ones usually found at walmart. the higher end DVD players and my computer do not have this problem.

i haven't seen an option for a default language setting on the cheaper players. i was wondering if perhaps the "default on" is just a byproduct of cheaper DVD players in general? i'm trying to accomodate for various dvd players i may encounter.

i'm trying to achieve the best possible video quality so i wanted to have as much room as possible just for the movie. i also have no use for the menus. right now, since i'm using cheaper hardware for the DVD playback and viewing, the quality doesn't matter. i'm just "future-proofing" my backups for when i do purchase that 60" ;) i've actually seen the difference between encoding/transcoding when going over my parent's house and viewing it on their plasma.

thanks for the tip on imgtool classic. i'll be sure to check that out. i did see the "create iso" feature of rebuilder in the help files but was disappointed to find it was no longer in the newer builds.

here is a fairly simple set of precommands of the first vts (first file read w/ out the menu) refferencing the sub-picture prefferences
I'm just a novice in these matters but I think lines 4-6 reffer to the default languages of the player(s) while 1& 2 show chosen navigation ie.. menu selection
note that on your "cheaper" players you do not have the option to choose default languages I think it bypasses/ignores 1-3 and chooses the language of your player thus plays the defualt sub pictures!?!

    *note sub picture streams 0=english 1=french 2=spanish 3=portuguese while the fifth menu option->> 4=off

now I wonder if jdobbs could circumvent this little feature w/ out losing dvd compliancy for these older players

thanks for the help. i'll try to compare the sub-picture settings of the original DVD with the DVD-RB created one.

it would be great if this could somehow be implemented through DVD-RB instead. it doesn't seem that hard, then again i'm not a programmer. i'd think other people would be having this problem, but i haven't seen any posts concerning it and DVD-RB. my only concern is if what i'm doing stays in compliance with the DVD/subtitle specs.

i should really get back to studying for my physics midterm, but it's so easy to get caught up with this stuff.
