With hard drive space getting cheaper I have been ripping movies in file mode and storing them on portable hard drives. Are there any disadvantages to doing this ? I watch them on my PC or I burn them at a later date and it seems to work.

The only disadvantage is that you can't watch them on your home DVD player.^^

There are no disadvantages of storing the files on your hard drive. In fact, you can just play them through most updated media players, especially windows media player itself. If the files are .vob extensions, windows media player, and many other players, will compile the data together and play it as if you just stuck in the dvd. This is a really good idea if anyone is still using an older dvd drive, that is slow, or has functionality issues.
