i take it that the MP£ bitrate is locked in a setting that only allows you to convert to a certain bitrate! use sound editors, like Soundforge, wavelab and peek for MAC. this does the job and allows to edit and add and changes to the sound that are appropriate, like boosting volume, eq and allows you to add various effects.
