I would like to crop a already dvd compatible mpeg2 without recompresing or rencode the file. I use adobe premiere and everything is fine but when i export i have to encode the file again and i don't want to do that because i loose picture quality and so on. I have mainconcept mpeg pro codec instaled, and of course the codec from my videocapture card. So i would like to use a software to crop the video and not to rencode the file when exporting. i would be very glad to find out that such software realy exists. Thanks.

    What do you mean "crop"?
Cut portions (commercials) out of the video, or actually cut off the top or bottom of a video stream?
Womble will cut. If you want to crop, the file MUST be re-encoded.

Okie, i've got it. If i want to crop i'll have to use a external software codec, but i've used main concept for premiere but i'm not very happy with the results, and i only use the crop efect from the bottom of the screen. Do you know some settings for that codec, or is best to capture with microsoft dv codec and then recompress the file using mpeg encoder to output the file in DVD format? I've seen so many results lately, i don't think i'll notice the difrence anymore :D. Thanks anyway for the answer. Greetz.

If the finished mpeg needs to be cropped (edited), then you could easily capture into DV-avi, crop it in virtualdub, and frameserve to your encoder.
Most encoders will also crop, but this adds to the encoding time.
Mainconcept is a superb encoder, what problems are you having with it? (It's crop function isn't that easy to use though).

So here it's the deal : My captured mpeg needs to be croped, and it's also constant bitrate about 6000 Kbps/s. I imported in adobe premiere, crop the bottom part with the crop effect(zoom bottom 2%) of my video, and I export the file using mainconcept mpeg. So i reduce the noise reduction from settings, and i also select variable bitrate. I think here is the problem. The resulted video dropes frame size significantly at about the half of the video. I use the same kbps from the original video, and the resulted video is the same size, but the dvd player loses cursivity at exactly the point where the codec? loses frame size( about 2-3000 kbps). The video quality it apears to be good, almost the same as the captured one. I realy need some settings for that codec, because i know what does some of the settings, but some are a mistery like "do half pel search".
