I have looked through a bunch of posts, and some come close to answering what I need, but just haven't found the exact solution just yet. That said, here is what I am looking for: I am using an ATI 7500-AIW to record TV shows on my PC. I set it to record in Mpeg2 format, at a video size of 720X480. An hour show usually comes in around 1.2GB. I have downloaded shows from newsgroups before, and I see that most are in avi format with divx encoded, and the file size is around 150-200MB, and the size of the video is rather large, I am guessing maybe 800X600. The quality isn't perfect, but it is still rather good. I would like to be able to record my own shows then convert them to that format for storage on CD-ROM. I use the ATI software for recording, womble Mpeg2vcr to edit out the commercials, and sometimes I use tmpgenc to convert it to mpeg1 if needed. I will keep searching for an answer also, but if anyone could point me to some software, or a link to a How-To, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks for your time.
Either use Pocket Divx Encoder, here http://divx.ppccool.com/ or try http://rita.lt/guides/AutoGK_DVDtoAVI.htm
Funny thing about pocket DivX encoder though is that it uses mencoder for encoding and can't actually encode with DivX. It uses XviD or libavcodec's ASP MPEG4 codec.
