when i try to use certain programs like virtualdub to convert my mpeg2 files to avi's the size doesn't go down like i thought it would.

i download anime epz and they are like 25 minutes long, usually a good size of around 640x480, quality is great looking and is only around 175mb in size. the file always says "video clip". how do i convert my mpeg2's to a "video clip" so that my 800mb files can be reduced down in size? Or what kind of settings should i have my tv tuner record at specifically so i can achieve the quality i seek at the lower size too? any help would GREATLY be appreciated as im running out of disk space! Thanks!
