    ive run gspot on some films and it comes back as. under video 4cc/mp42 name s-mpeg 4 version 2 some of the other films from the same collection(same download were in xvid) now i can play the xvid ones no problem on my standalone divx player but it wont play these others that shows the codec as being 4cc/mp42 or right clicking on the file and properties says its video compression ffds ...how can i convert these to something my divx player will play as a 700mb file rather than convert them to dvd which will mean 10 dvd's brb.ive tried just converting straight to xvid but the 700mb file ends up as nearly 2gig on best quality but unwatchable otherwise...cheers in advance.....and what is dx50 and how do i change the 4cc's into it as ive read on other posts???????

    DX50 = DivX 5.x/6.x
    MP42 = Microsoft MPEG-4 V2, which despite the name isn't actually MPEG-4.

    Most players support MS MPEG-4 V3 aka DivX 3, so it should be possible for them to handle MS MPEG-4 V2, but I think most don't. There was a patch to allow ffmpeg to convert DIV3/MP43 to ISO MPEG-4 without re-encoding, so once again that should be possible with MP42, however there are no such tools.

    Basically you need to re-encode to say XviD or DivX. Changing the fourCC only works for things that are the same. So you could change MP43 to DIVX or XVID to DX50, but you can't change MP42 to DX50.
