mpg playback and encoding problem help please

    ok i downloaded a southpark episode which is .mpg when i go to play it in wmp it says Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The file is either corrupt or the Player does not support the format you are trying to play. so i cant play it and when i go to encode it to put on vcd it says " file unsuported or something what can i do to put it on vcd
