can someone please explain to me what mshta.exe is?

I'm running Windows XP and currently have 20 running occurances of mshta.exe under the process tab in windows task manager. My first thought wasa worm or virus, but im not certain. Should i remove it and how might i go about doing so?

I have Malwarebytes and Avast, are they solid programs to use for this problem?

mshta.exe is a part of Microsoft Windows Operating System which is needed to execute .HTA files. This program is a non-essential system process, but should not be terminated unless suspected to be causing problems.

mshta.exe should not be disabled, required for essential applications to work properly.

Run both Malwarebytes’ Anti-malware and SUPERAntiSpyware. Both are Top Notch programs.
