I have been told by one of my buddies that there is a white box underneath my display pic in msn but it's not on my conversation window (only theirs). I tried another msn account to see if it was just my pc or something but when i signed in my buddy said that it wasn't there anymore...is it a virus or spyware??? and does anyone know how i could get rid of it??? If you need to see it you can add me on msn Thanks in advance
Hey mitchjm2 I have never heard of such a thing, and cannot conceive how such a thing can happen. Perhaps you can post a hijackthis log and ask your friend to post a screenshot of what is shown. Best Regards
Thanks for the reply cdavfrew, Apparently the white box is only there when i am appearing online and not when i appear offline...ill post the hijack this log and the screen-shot...it doesn't look too suspicious but i dont know how to turn it off and no-one i know has ever seen it before Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 10:40:03 AM, on 6/12/2008 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.6000.16640) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgwdsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\LightScribe\LSSrvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\HPZipm12.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\slserv.exe C:\Program Files\Alcohol Soft\Alcohol 120\StarWind\StarWindServiceAE.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Center\SymWSC.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgrsx.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Mitch\My Documents\AudacityPortable\App\Lock My PC 4\lockpc.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\D-Link\AirPlus G\AirGCFG.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\bin\jusched.exe C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgtray.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\msnmsgr.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\usnsvc.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Mitch\My Documents\AudacityPortable\App\Window Hide Tool\Window Hide Tool.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Windows Live\WLLoginProxy.exe C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157 R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896 R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896 R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157 R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Hey mitchjm2. Nah... it doesn't look suspicious to me. I have seen many strange things in msn, all because of obscure settings which might have been set by accident. For all you know, it could be a second display picture or something. No malware I know of can do that; altering MSN code is unheard of, even though some malware do use msn to spread. There is a slight possibility, though, that this is malware trying to spread. If your friend can click on the box, and it leads him to a suspicious website, eg: selling antiviruses, unclean stuff..., it may be that you are infected. Ask him to click on the box and see. If nothing happens, you most probably are clean. Best Regards
Hey cdavfrew, Thanks for your help...i didn't think it looked suspicious but i thought i might check anyway...my buddy tryed to click it but nothing happens...and a lot more of my buddies have it now...i mean like nearly everyone has it....it's also when appearing offline and is just random...sometimes it is there sometimes it isn't..check this out http://research.sunbelt-software.com/threatdisplay.aspx?name=White Box MSN&threatid=14203 Thanks again
