I have this problem ever since I started running my PC audio through my optical cable into my 5.1 receiver. The sound in the movie(s) sounds great except for the music. It only happens with featured music not the films score. For example, if there is a happy moment in a movie and the orchestra plays an upbeat piece I can hear that just fine but if the next scene in the film was in a bar and the jukebox was playing 'Sweet Home Alabama', the only channel I can hear the music on is my subwoofer and all voices that are spoken during that song sound perfect as if there is no problem at all. Every movie I play in my computer whether it is a digital download or a DVD has the same problem.

I can't think of any reason why this would be happening and am hoping someone can help me. I have k-lite codec pack installed and usually watch all my movies through WMP. I have tried a few other players including Media Player Classic and VLC but have the same problem.

I should mention this only happens with digital audio throughmy PC, DD and DTS. Television shows that I download do not have this problem neither do audio albums or CD's. DVD's played through a standalone DVD player (through the same optical cable) do not have this problem either. Can't think of anything else that might help. thanks for reading hope someone can help.

Well since there doesn't seem to be an issue with your 5.1 Receiver, maybe you need to check your Soundcard/playback device settings, and make sure you set it to 5.1
Make sure to set SPDIF in your SW player(VLC) if that is an option..
