Hi, I'm thinking of building an HTPC for my living room.
It's my first time and I'm a girl (eheheh) so bear with me ;)

I don't wan't to spend more than 300€, and I'm only gonna use the HTPC to play movies (mkv, divx, x264) and do some retrogaming. I also need this HTPC to be able to catch the wireless signal from my other pc (they're gonna be 10m apart, with 2 walls in between them).

After some research I've come up with this configuration:

    NOX Media Black
    ECS A780GM-A AMD780G SKAM2
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ - 2,6 GHz, Cache L2 1 MB Socket AM2 (possibly I can downgrade this to a 4850E so I can save some money)
    KINGSTON 2GB DDR2 800MHZ
Samsung 320GB Spinpoint F1 DT SATA
Nec/ Sony AD-5200S 20x DVD Writer Dual Black
    Asus WL-138G V2
    LC Power Silent Giant 420W

This config costs me something like 315€.
Any suggestions? Upgrades/downgrades? Please be free to save me some money :p

You can also suggest a whole new configuration, I'm receptive to them.

    Thanks a lot.

all looks good to me. I have a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800 setup as a media sever (HTPC), and have no trouble with it.

How does your system behave handling High Definition movies? Does it lag or something? Wich motherboard are you using? Thanks.

no lag with hd. My motherboard is the ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe. I am also running a Raid 0, so my hard drive speed is faster.

I just upgraded my PC with new stuff (almost everything), and the leftover parts I built this HTPC. All I had to do was buy a new case. So I have been using the same motherboard, CPU, memory, hard drives for a couple of years now as my media server. Never had an issue.

The case I bought (for the HTPC) was a silverstone brand. It looks like a stereo, and fits right in with the entertainment system in my livingroom. Still, for me, it's main purpose in life, is a media server. I have 4 Tvix media players connected to it throughout the house, which I use those to watch my movies/TV series with.
