My Divx codec was automatically deleted from my Xbox 360!!!

I connected to LIVE only one time, early this year, to download the Divx codec, which I saved to my hard drive.

Today I tried to watch a movie and got a message saying that I needed to connect to LIVE to download the codec. I searched for the codec file on my hard drive and it's gone! Only a video bookmark data file is in the "System Items" folder.

I don't understand why it was deleted!

I haven't done anything out of the ordinary with my 360, besides playing the new GTA and Call of Duty games.

I would connect to LIVE to redownload the codec but I am afraid my console will get banned. That's a problem because I don't want to lose the ability to copy discs to the hard drive.

Can someone please tell me what happened? It doesn't seem like it was a hard drive failure; otherwise all the files on the hard drive would have been deleted.

this seem to happen to me all the time. I would always have to connect to live to get the update again to play movies. But now im banned so i cant even play movies anymore. Seems like you just have to connect to live and get the update if u wanna watch a movie

or download and use a program called Tversity
this one doesnt require that you connect to live to play your xvid movies

there is a setting you need to alter, if you google it you will find it.
    good luck

you use this program instead of windows media player

I have never played a game on LIVE. I have never kept my xbox connected to a network cable. Will my console still get banned if I connect to LIVE to download the codec, assuming no disc is in the drive?

I am not interested in streaming movies. I would rather watch movies on my PC.

then why do you care about your 360 if you're going to watch movies on your PC?

Rather than streaming, I would watch movies on my pc. Rather than watching movies on my pc, I would watch non-streamed movies on my 360.

How exactly are you planing to watch them? It seems to me streaming them from your PC would be more convenient than any other method, so I'm genuinely curious why the aversion.

    Streaming lags.
    Streaming requires a computer.
Streaming requires that I install additional software on my PC.
    Streaming requires a network cable.
Streaming requires a home network set up.

It's much easier FOR ME to put videos on a usb drive and watch them on my 360.

streaming doesnt lag...at least for me it doesnt. and to watch videos on a 360 that has the NXE dash, you pretty much have to connect to live every time and download the codec. if you could purchase an older console that doesnt have NXE, then you can just manually put that media update on a different HD and use it. you wouldnt want to use the same HD as it would update the console to NXE.

This is at least partially untrue. You only need to download the codec once, even on the NXE. The problem people have is that they send their consoles' into MS, or something else happens so that their using the update on a different console than the one the update was downloaded to originally., and then much like any other DLC, to use it on another console you must be connected to Live. The way around this is that anytime you get a new console, you need to create a new gamertag, and download the media update. From then on, you'll be able to use the update without being connected to Live. It seems strange that you'd need to authorize a console to use a free update, but that's just the way it works due to the marketplace system.

well i have to DL it every time. this console has never been into MS, and the HD has never been on a different console. thus, the reason i prefer streaming via tveristy. that and i dont have to get up, copy said movie/tv show onto a nerd stick, and put it in the 360.

But has your gamertag been on a different console? And is it possible you downloaded the codec for the first time using that gamertag on a different console?

It has nothing to do with the console itself, and everything to do with your gamertag. If you downloaded the codec using your gamertag, and then redownloaded on a different console, then it's no different than redownloading an arcade game at a friend's place. You'll be able to use it so long as you're logged in, but as soon as you leave, the friend will lose access to that game.

I know it's silly since it's a free download, but using the marketplace system, it doesn't matter.

I use Tversity regardless, but it's nice not having to transcode the media as well to make it a viable format, as when 2 or 3 360s are streaming from the same PC, it takes more processing power than my rig can handle.

now the gt has been on a different console. ive had the same console up until this last ban wave when i pulled mine so it didnt get hit. but even on that console it would make me redownload the codec. and now on the new console that ive been using for the last month, whenever i try to use the 360 to watch from a usb stick, it asks to dl it.

That's strange, though I have heard the 360 treats it differently when you're streaming vs. directly connecting a usb drive/stick etc to the console. I've heard when running from USB you'll always need to be connected to Live, but I'm unsure why that is. With regard to streaming though, I had this issue, so I created a new tag, downloaded the update using it so that it would be authorized to the console, and since then when streaming I have never needed to be connected to Live to use the codec again.

Hey Bash.. ever get the feeling they are having a sneaky look at the metadata of whatever file you are trying to play.. tagged frames for instance.. like WMP 9/10 do?

I have asked the question in the past about why I had to be connected to live in order to be able to play my movies. They said they have to pay rights for each time the codec is downloaded. I call BS on this and all they are doing is roping you into having to have Live to play your movies.

If you notice most if not all arcade games you buy you still have to be connected to live in order to play the full version that you bought. Its yet another way for M$ to screw us out of a fuction that should be ours to begin with. Also Tversity sucks for streaming. The way it set up your folders and instead of having 1 folder you have to go through several to get to your content. It just makes more sence to use WMP to stream.

you dont have to have multiple folders. when i go to video, then movies, its all there. and its not like MS is forcing you to be gold members so you can get the codec or play the arcade games. silver members still get it anyways. not sure what the big deal on the arcade games is anyways, obviously the person would have at least silver membership that can connect to live in order to dl the games to begin with.

Stop spreading nonsense. So long as you're using the console you bought the arcade games on, there is no need to be connected to Live. And if you get a new one, you can use the License Transfer Tool on their website to transfer them, redownload on the new console, and go back to not needing to be connected to Live to play Arcade games, use codecs, etc, etc.

Also, it's quite easy to set up TVersity to use one folder, just like WMP or anything else. I have my content in 3 folders, TV, Movies, and Music, but could just as easily set that up in one folder if I wanted to.

If you're going to spread information, make sure it's at least somewhat correct please.

I don't care about streaming. That's not the point of this discussion.

Then how come I didn't have to keep downloading the divx from LIVE during a 6+ month period?
