I just got an update from my comp. I'm using Windows XP. It said "DVD Check" It told me that there is a new firmware available for my drive. It said would I like to install it. I did. And now after installing the new firmware for my DVD burner, neither of my drives are working. Neither of them are reading any CD's, DVD's or anything. Nothing is happening. I don't know what happened. I just installed firmware and my old DVD-ROM drive stopped working as well as my new HP DVD Writer-420i. They both just don't read anything anymore. They were working perfectly until I installed the firmware. I tried putiing in the installation CD's but they don't even read those. Do I need to do something? Also if I only installed firmware on one drive, then why are both not working. I'm really confused. I have no idea whatsoever as what I need to do. Please help. I need my drives. I also tried removing them from device manager and letting my copmuter detect them again. It detected the drives, but neither of them don't do anything. This is really getting me mad. I just installed some stupid firmware, and now neither of my drives work. Can anyone plz gimme some help. I really badly need this. I really need my drives working.

Have you tried using system restore to an earlier date? This won't change the firmware you installed but it sounds like something else in Windows got messed up also. One thing I always do on firmware updates is unplug the drives not being undated so that only the drive I'm flashing is active and on line.
We all answer questions on here part time. You just have to wait till someone gets to you.
