today I tried to make a backup of a dvd in nero, but it said that the disc did not have sufficient space on it. I put another brand new dvd-r in the drive and it was the same thing. When I look in 'My Computer' "it says DVD-RW Drive" when there is no disc inserted. When I put a blank dvd inside it says "CD Drive". What is going on? Can someone please help me? I'm using a Sony DW-U10 that has been flashed to a Sony DRU-500A.

What DVD disc were you trying to backup? Are discs otherwise playing normally in the drive? If so you shouldn't worry about what the label is in 'my computer'.

I have the same effect (lg gsa-404b).
And I think it's a WINDOWS problem with
    not 100% supporting dvd drives.

PMSL I just went through the same damn thing. Here I was ripping and compressing DVD's go to burn using Nero and it would spit the blank DVD out saying it didnt have enough space on it. Had me stuffed for days, I swear to god I ripped and compressed Back to the future 10 times before I spat the dummy.
I don't know what caused it but the only way I could fix it was to reformat my HD's.
Both my DVD writer and DVD Rom were reading as CD drives, would recognize CD's and CDR's but read all DVD's as full.

    Updating your ASPI doesn't work
Good luck, if you find out how to fix it without reformatting please let me know so I know what to do if it happens again.

But Oriphus my DVD writer is a Pioneer 106D and it did the same thing.

Yeah, the 106 seems to have had a few teething problems, especially with its firmware. Pioneers in general, are less bothersome than Sony's. One of the longest threads on this site is problems with Sony DVD WRiter's lol

I have a Pioneer 106, just upgraded from my faithful and trustworthy 103.....and guess what???????

Went straight it no probs, within ten minutes it was happily burning away, no problems AT ALL.....

Have not flashed the firmware, no need, cos I just use it for burning, not reading.....but it does read ok....

Like what Oriphus states, less bothersome indeed......

The ONLY issue I ever had with the 103 was NERO......it was hit and miss ALL the time.....9/10 it sized the drive completely, even when I had closed Nero down, Windows could never take control of the 103......

I trashed Nero, shortly after updating to a later version 5.5.5.9.17.

Before I trashed it Nero was settling down, but once bitten and all...........went Recordnow max, and then Recordnow DX and have never looked back........

I have just given my Dad the old 103, he has Nero and Recordnowmax and guess what.......the 103 Burns fine, creates a readable disc BUT the 103 will not read the disc, neither does ANYTHING else on the same IDE.......

Nero was the problem........Uninstalled it, left Recordnowmax on and Wallah......ye old faithful is back in operation.......

The new Firmware A301 fixes this.
The drive is displayed with its correct name and if one can believe LG, the Update also improves the drive speed for some CD brands.

    Hope this helps

SHINTARO Disks make my DVD drives turn into CD drives, if you have these disks, string them together and use them as sun catchers :) Or use them as frisbies and let your dog fetch them. Thats all their good for.
