Hi I have XPS2 with one Hard drive (C) and i bought external hard drive, which is called (E) so whenever i plug it with the usb it makes noises and clicks :-( is there something wrong with the external HD or my PC?
Someone told me because the HDs might be both Master drives and it should be only 1 Master??

I tried the external hard drive in my friends PC and it didnt make the noises i get on my PC.

Please tell me what is wrong and how to fix this sounds as its giving me headache.

I take it that your computer works fine until you plug the external HD in and that the external HD works fine on someone else's system.

Try a different USB plug in terminal on your computer and try a different USB cable. Might make a difference.

Whoever mentioned about Master and Slave settings could be headed in the right direction. I don't have an external HD but I do know that there are pin settings on Disk Drives for Master and Slave. There's a third pin position that I can't recall the name of. Try to find the place for any settings on your external HD. Your external should not be the Master. The pin plug in/out thing is very tiny on Disk Drives.

I am not sure where any pin settings might be on an external HD; since I don't use one. Ran a search for installing an external HD and found this link:

    http://www.smartcomputing.com/Edito...cle=articles/2004/w1510/07w02/07w02.asp&guid=

Probably a zillion more hits available online. It mentions a USB 2.0 connector vs a 1.1 connector. Might be important. The article makes it sound easy. Might be something wrong with your PC; I would not be able to figure that out.

    Good luck.

    I found the problem,,
Its to do with my USB because I have 4 USB sockets 2 in the front & 2 in the back and because all of them in use at the same time (I have (bluetooth+Cam+Card Reader+the external hard drive) all pluged at the same time so when I unpluged the other 3 USBs the sounds stoped :)

Thank you again and i will read the link you posted above.
