My new DVD-/+R writer will burn either -R and +R DVD

I sarted burning DVDs with my laptop which can only burn +R(cant burn -R DVD) but can be played on DVD players and computers. Now my new desktop has a duallayer DVD-/+R writer. Using the same procedures as my laptop when it burns the DVD+R will only play on my computers and not my DVD players. And when I use DVD-R it will play on the DVD players but not my laptop(read and writes +R. Can I do any thing so my new writer will at like my laptop writer?
