When my original NEC DVD burner appeared to have gone bad, I replaced it with a new Pioneer. My other drive (a Samsung CD-Rom)was still working. Now, after installing the Pioneer, suddenly the CD-Rom is not reading discs! What gives?? Could it be that my original DVD burner was just fine and there is a problem elsewhere. I tried to reload the drivers without any improvement.

maybe you need to look at the jumper setting on the back of the drives. if they're on the same cable you need a master and a slave. my guess is that one of them is on "cable select" and the newer drive is confusing the old one.

Good call Rooster33! The new DVD burner was set to "master". I compated it with the setting on the original unit, which was set to
'cable sellect'. All works well now. Thanks!!
