My pc wants me to format my external hardrive but i dont want to because it has all my important stuff on

Hi i have just plugged my external hard drive ionto my pc and it is telling me that i have to format it . btu it has all my important stuff in there i i cant delete them is there a way i can get round this. also i am running on vista.

 

give us more info on hardware when posting. try your external drive on other pc's and laptops. check the manufacturers community forums for similar issues. do not format. that should be your very last option.

If I have understood it well, your EXTERNAL hard-drive is saying goodbye... but you don't want to format it.

I think that the best solution is running your PC with a BOOT-CD (doesn't matter if it is vista or xp, I recommend XP-LIVE because of the drivers) and connect your external hard-drive before running the LIVE-CD.

So, you can save the essential data of your external hd on dvd's or just in another external hd (remember to connect it to the pc also before running LIVE-CD).

ok i think i got ya. by the way i have windows vista and my hd is a ovation 160 gb . Also i got vista with the laptop so were do i get the cd's to boot the pc with. so i plug my hd in and then put the boot cd in then i will be able to trnasfere my work etc to a dvd ? is that right

 

I suppose that, but pay attention about what CD-Booteable you use... the original Windows CD-DVD won't do anything. You have to use a LIVE EDITION like this:

Extract it with your favourite extactor (like WinRAR) and burn it (with Nero, for example)

Turn off your pc, connect your external harddrive, and turn on your pc. Before Windows charges, put in the cd that you have just burn.

Your computer will load with a new "XP Theme", and I hope you would recuperate your hd data.
