    Hey there,
just to let you know i just joined today and im hoping to be able to carry on coming to these forums as they look great!

    Anyway onto the point,

I got a ps2 slim on my 9th birthday (i think...if it was my 9th B-Day then that was 4 years ago) and for about 3 years it was working properly.....i mean it fell a few times and stuff but it would still work. now every time i put in a game or a movie or anything else the playstation would play, it would read the disk for ages and then it would say that the disc could not be read...i found out that the ribbon (the one connected to the laser A.K.A the disc reader) was ripped out by my baby sister. so i replaced it and it still didnt help....ive tried taping the disc break like it sez in another topic, and that hasnt helped. i think the laser just might need replacing, but i wasnt sure so i came here...any help?
BTW it started not reading discs around november last year ( i think....)
    thanks in advance! :)

P.S. i am using my PS2 flat at the moment and its so old and used that it wont even play movies or music! lol! and it hardly reads games anymore...so...uh...yeah...id really apreciate it if someone helped with my problem here...

If your disc spins ok, doesn't make any grinding or clicking noise then I would guess it is just your laser that needs replacing.

Your laser may just be dirty, you can try cleaning the laser CAREFULLY with a qtip and some rubbing alcohol. Dampen the swab in the alcohol [make sure it's not too wet] and gently clean the laser in a circular motion. Use the dry side of the swab to then dry the laser off in the same motion.

If you still get DRE (disc read error) then you will have to replace the laser.

Ok it does just sound like it has a hell of a time to read the disk, but your disk at least spins.

Just wanted to make sure you worm laser gear was working or not.

The laser is not very expensive to replace for the slim.
If you can't buy from ebay, then estartus.com , among others sell the laser.

    kk thanks!

one last thing though, when i mentioned the grinding niose, i forgot to say that when you listen to the disk spinning, you can hear it spinning then stopping, spinning then stopping, spinning then stopping, along with the grinding noise and this lasts for about 10-20 seconds

Its still your laser. As long as the laser moves into place, the disc spins, but just can't read the disc, you just need to replace the laser.

    I bought a KHM-430 for my slim V14. I paid $19.80usd
They have a online store or ebay store

I think they are a bit better than the Sony PS2 PVR-802W

You just need to know your model number and what laser you have already.

V12 had the SPU-3170, but a lot of people change the whole deck to PVR-802W as the V12 was noted for the coils to heat up and burn out the laser.

Look at the bottom of your PS2 for the SCPH xxxxx number or press Triangle when in Browser on your PS2

When you get a new laser they come with anti-static points soldered.

You need to use soldering braid and a solder gun to desolder these anti-static points in order to activate the laser.

You could also ask the seller to remove them for you.

You could check out videos on youtube on changing a slim ps2 laser.

Its not really hard at all.
