Hi! It's always good to see anouther X-B.i.t User! What exactily is the problem you are having and what are these Hacks that you are speaking of? The X-B.i.t is a Modchip not a storage Device. It can not run Hacks as you say, but rather Cracked BIOS images (of up to 2Mb's in size),. In you package you should have recieved the Chip (Did you break the 'Write Protect'?) Two sets of Wire Connectors (Yellow and Black) and a smaller Connecting Board with Dipswitches and an USB1.1 Connector and a USB Cable. Did you connect this up to? Depending on how you managed to build this into your XBOX™ it may have be possible that one or both connections came loose. You might want to recheck this. The Board with the Dipswitches should be glued to the exterior of the XBOX™ for easier access (i.e. Flashing and Bank settings). You can test your 'Connections' by useing the USB Cable and the Flashing Software that came with your Chip. (or you can download it from DMS Labs), you shold 'see' a Green LED on this 'Dipswitch Board' and by pressing the 'Connect' button on the Flash-ing Software you should then be able to install a cracked BIOS image into your XBOX™. Where you might find these BIOS Images? Well if #xbins does not have it I guess you could try the 'Usual Places' (whatever Places those might be!),. I will tell you however, that some of these 'Files' are called 'Xecuter2' Evox' (yeah same People as the Dashboard) or Complex It would be of great use to you to have a working knowlede of which XBOX™ version you have to as you can NOT JUST INSTALL ANY 'OL BIOS IMAGE, you should stumble across. You need to pay close attention to which Video Encoder Chip your XBOX™ uses (i.e Conextant XBOX™ 1.0 ~ 1.2, Foucs 1.3 ~ 1.4 and Xcaibur 1.5 & 1.6a/b) A BIOS that has the instuction set for the wrong Encoder will cause you to not have Video! and you will not be able to have video again till you find a correct BIOS Image for your XBOX™...
Modding the xbox is just replacing the BIOS with one that can run unsigned (homebrew) code. A softmod or modchip lets you replace the BIOS, and that is what lets you run your own code (game backups, emulators, dashboards, ...) and FTP to your xbox (modding games, playing games without CDs). For example, to mod halo 2 you modify a map file. EDIT: P.S. #xbins is the usual places
For me a Hack is something that changes the way a Program was ment to run. By Program I mean Game Content, (i.e. DOAX or GTA:SA) Those are 'Hacks'. By BIOS I mean that thing that you should normaly see when you boot up you PC 'Dell Logo'? for ex. IIRC BIOS is the (Boot Instruction Operating System), This is in short the 64k bytes of fame in the '64k bites should be enough for anyone!' line, ...long ago in a Galaxy far far away, when DOS ruled! So try thinking of that 'Green Flubber' sequence as not beeing unlike that 'Dell Logo' and that's preaty much the XBOX's™ BIOS. Once everything settles down again and, you the User have some control again (i.e. the 'Memory', 'Music' 'Settings' etc... Screen), you are now in whats called the 'Dashboard'. So if we start thinking of the 'Flubber Sequence' as the BIOS Boot sequence. We can think of this Dashboard as the Operating System (i.e. Mac or Windows... Depending on how you swing, but I hope you get it... The whole point of placeing this 'Chip' or 'Softmod' inside the XBOX™ is to prevent it from booting and to basicly 'Hijack' the XBOX™ into booting Code that was never ment for it. (i.e. the rights to play Homebrew, Backups or to even run Linux if you so wish),. Here is as good a list (as you can find), on 'Cracked Retail BIOS Images' http://www.xbox-scene.com/bios_retail.html The only thing you have to watch out for. Is the same thing I told you before. And I'll say it again Find a BIOS Image that matches your XBOX™ Generation. (A dodggy old XBOX™ might look a lot like any other on the outside (save the LE's),. But there are in fact **EIGHT DIFFERENT VERSIONS OUT THERE v1.0 ~ 1.6b** each version is just different enough that you'll quickly run into truble if you decide to use the wrong BIOS Image on your Modchip. Infact this is not so critical as with a Modchip you'll be able to recover quickly by tuening the Mod off and reforamting the Chip. Simple enough really! But, why waste your time! inspect your XBOX™ to determine which type (1.0~1.6b) your XBOX™ falls into. Then you can use the above chart to then 'search' for a cmpatible BIOS Image that you'll then be able to Flash with the included Software from DMS (or if you do not have this Software you can get it here: http://www.dms3.com/cgi-bin/xbit/site.pl?page=home Again some of the better BIOS Images come from either Team Xecuter (Xecuter2), or Team EvoX (EvoX M8 or D6), But at this stage irregurdless most Cracked BIOS's accomplish the same thing so once you find the correct Image that's right for you there's almost no reasion to have to change it...
