    Hello,

I'm completely new to doing anything with hardware so please forgive me if this question has been answered already and if it had would you be kind enough to point me in the direction of the answer.

I have an old Sony 40G HDD for PS2 and was wondering if it can be used as an external hard drive for my Dell PC and if so how would I go about formatting it and turning it into an external hard drive. Also if it can be used as an external HD can it be connected to PC via a USB cable? And if it can't be used as an external hard drive can it be used as an internal hard drive for a PC and again if so how would I go about doing this?

Thank you very much for your patience and time. Again please forgive my utter lack of knowledge about this subject.

no posting email addresses as per forum rules above. can get an external usb case for the drive that also comes with software if needed. might have to unlock the drive 1st in the console before able to use it.

Thanks very much for your reply. Have edited my original message to remove my email addy, sorry for that.

Was wondering if it is possible to unlock the drive another way as I've not got a PS2 console anymore.

    Thanks again.

No, you dont have to unlock anything. Though if you plan on getting the ps2 harddrive to fit in a normal usb enclosure, you'll need a special screwdriver to get the mounting rack off of the hd. Im not sure where to get the screwdriver for it however.

thanks very much for all your replies.

just to make sure that i've got everything right, i need to somehow get the mounting box off the ps2 hard drive then i should be able to get it into a usb external hdd case. would that be a 3.5" case? once it's in the case then i should be able to connect it to my computer via usb and load the necessary software that comes with the case onto the ps2 hard drive? is this correct? and this won't mess up anything on my pc if i do this?

iwas thinking about the same about a month ago, but dont you need a special pin cable, because of the size difference or is there a specific cable designed for this kind of pin cables?
