I agree with bitcount,but he or she is wrong about nascar not being a sport.Remember...not all sports reqiure you too be RAMBO. Darts,golf,most racing,hunting,fishing,bowling,...ect....these SPORTS you do not need too BE IN SHAPE too play.Nascar is a sport...BUT...you DO NOT need too be athletic or in good shape too be a excelent racer. Hand/eye skills are VERY important.Being able too not go too the bathroom FOR A LONG TIME is somthing you need too get used too.BUT...the bottom line is...you do not need too be ATHLETIC too race.
You don't need to be athletic to play tiddly-winks either.. And that is undoubtedly a sport.. as for fishing, I think the jury is still out. I don't consider nascar to be a sport either,because the car does all the work.I mean it is cool driving fast and all,but I wouldn't call it a sport.The sports you mentioned LT561986 such as darts,golf,hunting,fishing,and bowling require more than just sitting in a seat and turning a steering wheel.The hand and eye cordination doesn't mean anything if that is true then soldering should be considered a sport.
Sports is a loose term for it. Sports can be anything in my book. The whole idea behind Nascar is to see who has the better car. They continually add mods to the car to make it perform better. That's why it's called a "Motor Sport". One slip up on anything and the team could have a very bad day. I don't watch that shit really, unless I'm drunk and tired of watching golf. I do like to see the awesome crashes they have here and there. Seeing someone catch on fire is pretty cool. It's also a great place to pick up drunk hillbilly chicks!
Not quite right, goodswipe. It's not about who has the better car at all: everything is regulated. Brands may be different, but the weight, gearing, power output, and nearly every other variable of the cars are identical. It's about who is the best strategic driver. That said, I don't think NASCAR is a sport at all. Any "sport" in it died in the late 50s when it became organized and the bootleggers were taken out of the tracks in corn fields and regulated. Since then, it's just a boring waste of fuel that only taxes a driver's patience and stamina, not even skill. The same goes for drag racing and most other forms of racing. They are so tightly regulated that driver skill levels and vehicular capability are all just short of equivalent. Rally is probably the last true motorsport left. There is still a wide variation on car and driver requirements, the terrrain encompasses everything from pavement to mud and gravel, and there are hard corners, long straight stretches, and every obstacle in between. Plus, no one gets bored watching rally. The same cannot be said for other motor "sports." My personal definition of sport includes the requirement that a spectator be able to watch a sport be played for one hour straight without getting bored. Therefore, we find: Basketball: Sport Baseball: Hell frickin' no. Hockey: Yes, it's a sport, and the most effiminate player has five more testicles than you. NASCAR: It's not a sport. NO. shut up and go drink another beer. golf: You're kidding. Soccer/Football: Guess what? They're both sports. Drag racing: Requires skill, but still not a sport. Marathon anything: No..might be fun, might be a hobby, but it's not a sport.
Yea, and the quality of those parts may be better, thus giving another racer the advantage. I dunno, I've watched several Nascar races and they talk about new gear the guy has installed. I dunno, maybe I had one to many beers! Either way, it's still called a motor sport no matter wtf we say.
Everything is tightly controlled, even quality, though. If one guy is running something new, everyone else is running something similar. You can call a freed man a freed man, but that doesn't make him free, just look in the 1880s southern portion of the US. Similar idea applies here.

Nascar is a sport. all the drivers are in better shape than any of you guys. i would bet on that. they workout daily, weight training running etc. you guys try sawing a steering wheel around Bristol or Martinsville for 500 or 600 laps in 90 degree heat
Indeed, I use to own (before gas prices got crazy) a 93 full size Chevy Blazer. My Blazer had a 8" suspension lift with 2" add-a-leafs in the rear, 3" body lift, solid front axle with 39.5x14.5 Super Swamper TSL's. That being said, my power steering went out one day as I was driving - talk about a HARD TIME trying to turn the steering wheel! It was damn near impossible. Anyways, last week some guys power steering went out on his car and those slicks or whatever you wanna call them are pretty damn wide. So I can only imagine the time that guy had trying to steer the car. He went on to finish the race somehow. So what I'm trying to say here is you gotta be pretty strong to be able to handle something like that.
Nascar is a sport, many of you have ridden on a roller coaster before, its like that almost nonstop with all that gravity being pushed at you, some drivers lose like 10lbs a race due to dehydration. Also, there is no room for error, just sit down and watch how close they get to each other and not wreck on the race track going 150+mph for 4hrs at a time. There is a type of racing in which the cars are identical, "IROC" racing, International Race Of Champions.
Well then.. how about watersports?? Volleyball.. admittedly, but waterskiing.. the boat does all the work surely.. and then there is the German type.. Aim may be important, but I can't see any trace of competition.
You just cant agree on anything can you, lol. Lets hear it from a dictionary: "Anything that involves an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc." I say anything that is competitive and that you can break a sweat doing, some may say fishing you can't, go deep sea fishing and catch a marlin without breaking a sweat!
Bruce, care to expand on that? Nate, if you think the NASCAR guys have it rough on the track, you really should check out the rally guys. Think about how having your car a fraction of an inch too far to one side at 120+ mph on a loose gravel road's curve can send you off a multi-hundred foot drop. You can't even see the road you're racing towards, so you have a co-driver reading off upcoming conditions to you so you may prep in advance. You wear all the gear NASCAR guys wear, and then some, and you do it getting airborne. There are points where a driver will go from 0 to 100, back to nearly zero as the negotiate a 180 degree turn around a space as wide as the length of their car, then get back to 100 in less than 20 seconds. Badass, no?
And bowling?? rolling a strange shaped ball close to another smaller one, either on a flat or sloping lawn outside or even more strange indoors on carpet.. then theres skittles.. I can see some point to skittles.. it's fun trying to knock things over at a distance when drunk outta your skull... Criteria, yes? Just like others said, every sport is ridiculous when you take pause. 1. Large, sweaty, grown men pushing and pulling each other. Sometimes, an oblong ball happens to be in the area. 2. Men and women drop a ball through an iron hoop. They drop because they are freak-tall and don't need to throw it. 3. People hit a tiny ball with a tiny stick and try to put in in a tiny hole a not so tiny ways away. 4. A bunch of men or women kicking a ball about on some grass attempting to get it into a net while being shouted at by thousands of socially challenged mentally substandard people. So given the American football, basketball golf and soccer (what a horrid word), knocking down a bunch of sticks with a ball doesn't seem so silly. Standing in front of the sticks with another stick "protecting" them does seem a little stupid though, especially for days on end..with a result of a draw even though the total scores may be different???
