    Hello all.

I am a regular on these forums and know how tedious it is to be asked the same questions again and again, so if i am asking a question that has already been answered please forgive me (but please help me too and direct me to the answer i am looking for)

I have used the original R4 card for many years and i love it.......

Now my nephew is looking for the latest games (grand theft auto for one) Whilst i have found and downloaded the ROM it will not work on my (or his) R4 card. Searching for updated software (firmware) i have become aware that the R4 software V1.18 was the last version made and that there is V1.19 for clones only. i have tried the v1.19 and it actually got closer to loading the game it still never worked fully.

    MY QUESTION IS:-

Is there a software update available to make my R4 card work with the latest games?

If not what is the latest card i should buy him to work with the latest NDS roms?

Thanks for reading and again i apologise for repeating any already answered question. A link to any forum on afterdawn which addresses this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all your help (in advance)

Try YSmenu its a more up to date firmware for The Original R4, although for very new games you may want to get a new card, just avoid R4 cards as there are so many different sorts now with varying quality, go for acekard2i with akaio firmware, top of its game at the moment.

for Ysmenu Just copy all files and folders to a formatted SD card.

game compatibility list claims " GTA Chinatown (U) Xenophobia" works on YSmenu firmware

    Waytoo,

Your way too good at this. The ready made ysmenu link that you posted did the job.

Thanks a million for all your help.

I never said it was dead, just that there are cheaper, more reliable cartridges out there, with development teams that are (as much as they can be) committed to keeping the product up to date.

It is a tribute to the single developer who, for whatever reason, decided to take on this project. We'll see how long he lasts after a hundred or so of the "game xxx doesn't work, when will you have a patch?".

I never said you did I was asking in general.

The original R4 is better hardware than the acekard is now and now the R4 is being supported and clone cards(which work with the new firmware btw) can be picked up for £3 if you know where to look.

I didn't mean to imply that you were speaking to me. I was voicing an opinion in general.

The guy writing this software has little incentive to keep doing so except for "ha ha points". How do you know he'll be here next month or next week, for that matter?

The development teams on the currently shipping carts have a vested interested in maintaining the firmware and fixing bugs.

There's less than a $5 USD difference between an R4iSHDC and an Acekard 2i. IMHO a small difference to pay for "futureproofing".
