My drive has started not recognising blank discs, and I have had a Power Calibration Error a few times. On all occasions, the problem has sorted itself out by inserting a new disc or rarely on rebooting.

I have the latest firmware (1.0C) and am using Verbatim (Taiyo Yuden), or Fujifilm (not great, but not terrible either).

Is there anything i can do or is this the warning that my drive is dying. It has done sterling service for the last 1.5 years.

The latest firmware for your drive from NEC is v/1.0b
If you have legitimate firmware installed, then I dunno, your burner is probably knackered...?
What the hell - you always wanted Plextor anyway, right?

I dont think it is the firmware. I have been using it for ages with this firmware and according to this site
    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1517
    this is the latest one.

What would you recommend as a replacement? I do not need any capability to print on to discs as i am happy with my sharpie. Just something nice, simple and reliable.

I have the NEC 1300a also. The latest firmware is 1.0c This update addressed 8X media for this 4X burner. No update for 16X media ever followed.
