I've been told that there is a firmware upgrade to make my NEC 2500a burner into a 2510 dual layer burner. Has anyone else heard about this. If so, does it work and what software are you using and does that work. The drives works great now (not one coaster yet) and I would hate to mess up a good thing. Thanks in advance for the help.

I've heard it ruins your drive. Flash at your own risk :)

I flashed mine still with a doctored beta from herries web www.herrie.org site still works fine burns any media at a full 8x and reports as able to burn dual layer in DVD info pro still this can't be confirmed untill media become readily avalible but if you can't
afford to lose the drive don't do it

    Nevic,
I use DVDSHRINK and an older version of nero. I've heard
that Nero 6 had a problem locking up while burning with shrink.Download DVDDECRYPTER and use it to burn. Guides are at the top of the page. What firmware is your drive using. Upgrade may help. By the way, I went ahead and ordered the 2510a from newegg. Will be here Friday. I'll let you know how it works. If I can find dual layer media! I think I will have to get Nero 6 then, to burn dual layer. It's a never ending cycle. Oh yeah, All I've burned is dvd-r. No problem and plays on every player I've tried.

thanks for the quick reply! Hopefully it was a fluke, I am going to try again this weekend and see! I can burn +r's great. I think the firmware is 1.06, I'm not sure how to check. I went to nec site and wasn't able to navigate that great!? -Kevin

    nevik,
I'm using 1.06 myself. The Nero version I use has a section called tools. You can check your firmware of all your drives there. I guess Nero 6 has the same option. Hope this has been some help.

alright, I just want to share numbers and hopefully, you guys can tell me how fast your dvd burner is! I am running nero6 and dvdshrink with the nec2500a burner. I bought an enclosure and am using it as a external, connecting it with a usb cable to my laptop and I am getting it to burn +r's @ 6x 8280 kb/s. I have no complaints, but am curious to see what others are getting this nec to do in there desktop.

Also, when you get done ripping a disc is it hot? Mine aren't and I'm wondering if it is because I have the burner in an enclosure instead of a desktop! Another cool thing about the enclosure, is that it has its own light in the bottom right corner that changes when the dvd burner is ripping discs(green to red)!

    Thanks for the help guys!

I burn at 4x to 8x depending on tne media. My disc are not hot, but I have five case fans running so maybe that's why. Also Nero 6 has in the "smart start" menu under the extra tab, a section called get system tool. This will give you info on all the drives in your system, including firmware version.
    Hope this helps.
