As far as I know most DVD recorders can only burn at 2X; there isn't much need for faster as most times you are recording in real time.

You may be thinking of a DVD-R drive in a computer. Many of the new ones of those can record at 8X.

the 2500 will burn at 8x only if u have the media that supports this and then it has to be good media.i have the 1300nd and i've got media that say 4x but it will not burn at this speed but will do so at 2x.Ive now got a different media that say 4x and it burns at 4.1x so for little extra($1.00 per cake of 25) I now burn a full movie in around 15min.The 2.4x burn sounds more like a DVD-rw.

I use "princo" and "smartdisc(longten 001)" they both are 4x but the princo will not burn faster than 2x.Here in AUST we dont get to many places that sell the 8x discs so i just dont bother looking for them anymore, and the cost per disc is more than twice that of the 4x's.A lot of the brands that are mentioned in this forum i cant get down here so its a bit of trial and error with the unknown brands we've got.

this looks like two computers. Which computer has the NEC drive? Have you looked for firmware for your NEC drive? And having your ide set to DMA might help.

    scruffy67,

If you really want to find out where to get good media in Australia, try posting a question in dvd-r media. I know it's been mentioned :)

I have the same drive and utilizing the firmware out of the box, with dvd shrink and nero 6.0 burns dvd's,well so far flawlessly. Media is fuji dvd-r 8x, which burns @ the rated 8x. I'm very much pleased with this drive. Hope this helps.

Princo is known to be crappy media, I've never seen a review of Princo media from a reliable source that ever said anything different.

I have an NEC drive and burn at 8x on Ritek G04 disks ($0.50/each now) with no errors and no coasters. I use Herrie's beta firmware for the NEC 2500 (same components in both drives) here's link to Herrie's page, you can follow the links to forum pages in which you can get all the info and more than you wanted to know about NEC drives. Of course my 2510 is now identified as a 2500 in Windows, but who cares.

A note about the NEC drives, they are noted as good burners (stronger lasers are needed for dual layer disks), but poor readers. I use a 16x DVD ROM/CD burner for reading my DVD's. I can back up many DVDs in 20 minutes from decode to finish burning.

    Good Luck.

This is a dvd-5 right? Also if your going to post how long it takes you might want to include your pc specs. Someone with a lesser pc might think he's got a problem because his times may be alot longer.

Yes, DVD-5, of course. The 20 minutes is the minimum for a 4 gig or less movie onto a DVD-5 disk. The burns take around 9 to 10 minutes at 8x. And depending on software used and size of the movie the decoding, transcoding and/or encoding process can take anywhere from 11 to 12 minutes to 3 hours of more. (DVDShrink, DVD Decrpytor, DVD X-Copy Platinum, Nero Recode 2, Pinnacle Instant Copy or CCE Basic are all on my computer depending on the task at hand.)

Here's what I thought was a good review of the NEC 2500 drive, it shows what a good burner it is even on Princo disks, the reviewer tests the NEC drive with a variety of media and even crap media does well, something not seen on a lot of other drives. This good burner/poor reader result seems to be a constant across various internet forums on the NEC drive.

    More media tests.

I give my highest recommendation to Herrie's beta firmware for the NEC drive, works like a champ with single layer, haven't had an opportunity to test dual layer and won't bother until the price comes down.

Just a couple of thing demondog my spec is at the bottom of the page in my signiture for all to see what iam working on.I should have mentioned the software for sure my apolgies.I have been testing with Nero 6 and burning on the fly with 4 x datawrite media which has been taking around 10 to 12 mins based on 4gb of data.Iam hoping that when i get hold of some 8 x speed media that it will burn in around 8 to 9 mins.Although my friend has metioned he has been getting some poor results with the 8 speed Ridisc media and switched to the datawrite 8 speed no feed back on this media yet.But he has a sony dual dvd 8 speed writer so this may be just a case of the media not suiting his drive.I will post results from 8 x speed media when i get hold of some.So far though i must say iam impressed with this NEC2510 it is picking up and going with all types of media of which i have not always been able to do with my lite-on drive. The lite-on drive will copy anything but not with anything. As for firmware i always say if it works fine there is no point in messing with it.The firmware which is in the drive at present is rev 215 and will stay this way unless i come across a problem with no other option but to change.I have looked at the option to upgrade my firmware on the Lite-on so it can write 8 speed + media but it this would void my warrenty. It does what is suppose to do so there is no point in messing with it.
