I have a Dell XPS gen 4. I have no problem making copies of dvds/cds. If I try to make my own cd from my mp3's using both roxio and nero, the drive fails. any ideas?

its burning and then about 85% it fails, both on roxio and nero. Dell says it is the operating system and thinks my drive needs to be formatted.

    Dell are mostly idiots.

What media are you using? Is your firmware up-to-date?

    Are your MP3s copy protected?

Are you trying to burn a data or audio cd?

    That's strange :X

What version of Nero are you on? Might be wise to update if you haven't, but my bet is you have it up-to-date, lol.

Are these multisession discs? or otherwise? or doesnt it make a difference what you burn?

You have to burn MP3 files as data files, not audio files. "Audio CD" uses the .wav file format. Try recording the MP3 files as data files, making sure that the disc is finalized. (Multi-session settings keep the disc open for adding files later, but that prevents any other drive from reading what is on the disc.)

Keeping both Roxio and Nero on the same operating system can often cause problems even when no packet-writing utilities are included. It is better to pick one or the other.
